I like her conformation, and she is pretty cute! That foal is adorable as well! And look st you, so excited up there!!

I absolutely understand wanting lessons from someone that has a good rep/record, it wouldn't make sense to learn from someone who isn't the best, right?! I would start thinking about your style of riding, even when roping or moving cows, and if you are more of a "sit back and let the horse work" or "push them forward" or how you would classify your riding style, then you can start watching videos and figure out which clinician has the same riding style as you, or the same mindset on horsemanship, and I would go from there!

PG Dry Fire, the son of Playgun, isn't as short and stout as most Playguns. I'm not sure his exact height, but there's a video on this link that shows his height (with a tall rider to boot!), plus some more info. He took a 12yo girl to the Idaho State Junior High Finals rodeo this spring in the breakaway! That's a pretty trustworthy stallion in my mind!

Based on what you are describing with her being a solid rope horse, her good legs and mind, and in looking at her pedigree, she sounds like she's built solid. If she's the real deal that you're looking for, I say buy her! Pedigrees only mean so much when you find the right horse.

One stallion I am a HUGE fan of is Jesse James Jr (Mr Jess Perry x Loose Lips by FDD). He would add speed and mind, as well as conformation. https://www.stallionesearch.com/show_stallion.asp?horse=372 (ETA- his stud fee is $3500 I think, so that might be a limiting factor.)

Another stallion I love is Hired Gun (Playgun x Peppys Serenade by PSB). We bred our TB mare to him to add some grit and cow, and he is the real deal, just a sweetheart of a stallion. (stud fee $1500)

I also really like Fiestas Gotta Gun (Playgun x Firewater Fiesta). Obviously you can't go wrong with Firewater Fiesta, or Playgun. That would also add some more speed, plus cow, and keep the great conformation. We are breeding our TB mare to him next spring. (stud fee $1250)

What discipline would you be promoting the possible foal in? Roping? Barrels? There are so many good stallions out there, her bloodlines would cross great with pretty much anything!

Good luck!

PS- speaking of buying what you want, we just purchased a 3yo The Continental/Skipper W mare that came off the range and had never been touched. We liked the looks of her before we knew much about her, but her dam and sire were on site and they are both very talented horses, great minds, conformation, etc. so we took a risk and she is coming along great!

Yeah, she's really a good girl and a trooper too. Not marish and a worker bee. She isn't friendly but she's super gritty. I watched her head/heel and if she had thumbs she wouldn't need a rider LOL. She ran barrels with the wife and the husband that owned her then she sent her 6 and 7-year-old out to lope exhibitions on her and she went out in this little WP lope with the kids just hanging on. She knows her job for sure.

I would like to get more with that kind of work ethic and toughness. I was an eventer for about 16ish years and got injured and started roping/ranch work(Using a lot of Hancock horses) and then started endurance. I also have Arabians haha. With her, I would like to get into barrel racing and possibly some rodeo. If I got a quality enough prospect out of her I wouldn't be opposed to sending it for training/campaigning etc or even doing it myself once I've learned more.

I love the look of all the stallions you recommended and now I'm researching them so thank you! If you have anything else to add I'm always looking for more education. Especially starting out in something new to me. :)

She sounds like a heck of a horse! And you sound like you have quite the background yourself! Please keep us posted on how you come along together, I think it's going to be a fun ride for you two!

I agree with the other poster about staying within a certain range for stud fees, a general rule of thumb is the stud fee shouldn't be more than 20% of what the mare is worth (at least in the TB racing world). Even if she is priceless to you, if you want to market her foals, you don't want to have so much money in to them before they even hit the ground that you can't make a profit.

In thinking of a future foal, what would be your ideal? Are you hoping for more speed, more quickness/cattiness, more refined, etc? Based on her bloodlines, and what you are choosing to do with her, you could pretty much go any direction with a future foal. Cowboy mounted shooting, barrels, roping, cowboy dressage, anything really!

Here's a few more studs in that $1000-$2000 range, maybe one will pique your interest

Desirio, Strawfly Special x Lady Tenaya by Sixarun, 2017 stud fee was $2000 (SI 116 and has some super nice runners, for added speed in a foal)

Guitar Gun, Playgun x Dainty Lena by Smart Little Lena, 2016 stud fee was $800 (couldn't find 2017 stud fee, but he throws beautiful and good minded foals)

PG Dry Fire, Playgun x The Dry Look by Dry Doc, 2017 stud fee was $1500 (another Playgun, he has a junior high girl roping off of him, I've seen a lot of his foals in person and they are all fantastic)

Gotta Good Habit, Strawfly Special x First Femme by FDD, 2015 stud fee $1500 (he has AQHA points in racing, halter, performance halter, HUS, and heading-- talk about versatile!)

Hopefully those give you a few more options to think about!

She is and I will be happy to keep posting about our progress. I am hoping she will teach me a little about barrels. I have always wanted to try running barrels competitively(Jackpots/rodeo/etc) but honestly, I have never been in a position to do so(lack of horse/know how). I have actually only ran once competitively and I loved it. However, it was on an automatic horse and I was awful. It was for a ranch rodeo and they didn't even tell me I would be running barrels until I got there. I borrowed another competitors horse to do it. I was actually the second roper and wild cow milker for our group but apparently, the female runs the barrels. I didn't even know to grab the horn and ran in my roping saddle. I was literally trying to watch other girls so I would know the pattern. So I took some "lessons" which was interesting and kind of stopped me for a few years. Now I'm back to try again. I have ordered some Sherry Cervi videos and am looking for clinics to audit and whatnot.

Yeah I definitely don't want to get carried away on stud fees with her. The 20% rule of thumb makes sense too.

My future foal ideally would be competitive at barrels on a rodeo/1D level. I'm 5'11" and weight 160-170lbs so it needs to be fairly tall. Not warmblood tall but 15.2 or a little taller would be nice. Just for my comfort, I know that smaller horses can haul butt and win. The mare is grey so color really doesn't matter. If the foal is competitive at barrels I feel like it can definitely rope and maybe some mounted shooting later.

Oh my, Desirio is so nice. I love the Play Gun horses. Gotta Good Habit is super nice too and so versatile. I love his mind. He looks like a really solid "using" horse.

I noticed you didn't recommend any Frenchmans Guy type horses. That's totally fine. I was just wondering if there was a reason or they don't cross well on her type of breeding. I'm only asking because I see so many of them out there. I thought they were super popular. :) Thank you for chatting with me. I really appreciate the opportunity to learn.

I just wanted to say welcome to the board!!

Thank you! Y'all are awesome! Everyone is so friendly and helpful. I really appreciate it. I have lurked her for years and finally made an acct and asked my questions and I'm so glad I did!

I'm more of a support person because I don't have the knowledge some others on here have; the amount of wisdom on this board is staggering, so you did well by joining the ranks!!
