My mare has gotten too wide for my Triple Creek with regular bars. Im thinking I need something with wide bars and a larger gullet. A saddle dealer not too far from me has a couple and Id like your opinions in how they sit you, quality, and the fit. The first is a lisa lockhart with a wide tree. The second is a charmyne james with a 7 in gullet but she says they have a wider tree but im concerned it wouldnt be wide enough. And then she has two crown cs one with a 7 gullet and one with a 8.5. My mare is only 5, 16 1/2 hands and really thick. Like I said I have her in a triple creek, regular bars, 7 inch gullet. And the last couple months it been rolling off her terrible. What do you guys think? :)

I found a few websites that are pretty helpful for saddle fit. Gullet has so little to do with saddle fit. It seems to be so much in the shape/flare of the bars and the rock and twist. And most saddle tree makers (regardless of what company makes the saddle) all have a similar tree...so they all pinch the same place no matter the gullet width. https://www.horsesaddleshop.com/western-saddle-guide.html#.WdFVWmhSy...

The Charmaine James saddles are pretty wide, they have a lot of flair for the shoulders. This will probably fit your horse.

The Lockhart is a flex tree, I loved my saddle, but my horse didn't. The stirrups had a lot of swing/freedom, it sits you pretty square easy to sit in and get out.

The crown c, the old ones are more for a forward rider, if you like to sit on your pockets fx3 would be the way to go. There is a different philosophy with the crown c and fx3 I ride my colts in an 8/8.5 I don't think the 8.5 will fit.

The Martin btr a friend has one and she loves it, but it is also a flex tree.

I second this. My mare seems to fit well in a 7" gullet but the angle of the bars isn't wide enough as she is flatter backed. A lot of focus on the gullet nowadays and I think there is much more to it. I have heard wonderful things about the lisa lockhart but never gotten to try one personally. I loved a cactus CJ I tried and seemed wider than most. Seemed to have more flare in shoulder and a wider bar.
