Around here, we either usually have time slots (like 10 riders in the arena for 15 min) or else pay at the gate. 

Personally, I like time slots better because I know exactly what time I need to be ready. Sure, I've got to share the arena with others but that usually is not a problem.

I hate paying at the gate because then you end up standing in line forever and then your horse isn't warmed up anymore.....
 

I am not a fan of horse shows ....but there is one place around here that does time slots and I prefer this system. If you have multiple horses you can split them up and if your paying attention you don't have to sit at the gate for fear of missing your chance.

Where I have been they have mostly done just a sign in sheet and then pay at the office. There are no time slots, just remember your number and it will give you an idea of when you will need to be ready.

I've only been to a few races where you have to pay at the gate, it was very time consuming.

I have also experienced to time only nights, where you just simple pay a flat rate fee to use the arena and whoever is there takes turns working the pattern. But it kind of sucks because other people are using the arena as well, warming up their horses or just riding around and some do not pay attention to those that are working the pattern.
