Pick up something like this and get to work - it’s amazing how simple some look and how difficult good execution proves to be!!! I also like to work ground poles as it makes both horse and rider think about foot placement and how to shorten or lengthen a step quickly to avoid nicking a pole.

Katielovestbs - 2017-10-03 3:35 PM Do you have somewhere that you can swim him?? Love swimming finished horses =] Not sure if you're looking for strictly riding...but you can also maybe do clinton anderson type stuff? And maybe trick training? I always teach new tricks when I'm bored with mine. They can now smile, lay down, beg and hug haha
There is a pond I could have access to. I have never swam him. It looks like a lot of fun though!

oh its so much fun!!!  in the summer mine get swam about 3 times a week. its so much easier on their joints and really builds the lungs! They love it! I would stay away from barrels too. mine only see them if there is an issue that needs fix. I have a well road on my property thats clear and it runs about 1/2 mile so ill normally long trot 3 miles a day and thats where we get our sprinting in as well!

When we are stuck in the indoor arena due to weather I like to do poles, working on advanced moves, bareback riding, bridleless riding, and I do tons of obstacles. Tarps, pool noodles, small jumps, I made a chain of milk cartons that I do all kinds of stuff with, I use old feed bags and put 20 of them in a spot and make them go through them and back up in them (that is a good one, they tend to panic at first but once they figure it out they gain a lot of self confidence). Bridges, mailboxes and any other wacky things I can figure out. Roping.

I like to work my horses on their basics when they aren't on the pattern. Flexing. Spirals. Extension and then collection. Working through their back. Lateral and Vertical give. I am not a fan of trail riding. I try to end workouts with a little trail ride to cool them off and let them relax.

I learned a drill at a clinic. Take 5 tires (I have just the wall) and set them up in a 5 shape like on a rolling dice. from there do a circle around all 5 then just 3 then just the middle one and a corner and then just the middle tire, and repeat. Really makes them listen and be responsive. I like to go to the horn when turning just 1 and 2 because that helps work on me and my body position.
