I have a 16 year old chihuahua that I’ve had since he was 5 weeks old. We’ve Ive lived in the same house since I had him. He’s deaf and mostly blind. I’m getting married in a couple months and I have mixed emotions about taking him with me. I don’t want to leave him because I’m really the only one he knows but on the same hand I don’t want to move him because he’s lived there 16 years and knows his way around the house and yard without bumping into anything. What should I do?

Edited— we live with my parents now. I’m only moving about 300 yards down the road.

I had a dachshund growing up, and she eventually had to have both eyes removed, and she did great, she was older as well, 14. She occasionally bumped into things, but she knew where the stairs were, and never tried going down them.
I think your dog would be worse off if you didn't take him with you. He will learn the new house just fine. Familiarity is great for animals!

I would take him with you and see if he adjusts, if he seems unhappy or stressed you can decide then if it is time “to say goodbye”.

They are incredibly good at adapting to new situations. I would think he will feel better having a familiar person vs. a familiar house.

I would definitely bring him with you, I think it would be much easier to adjust to a new surrounding that still had some familiar smells (like you), rather than adjust to a life without his person.

I guess I'll be the odd one out. He knows his house, he knows your parents. I think it would be easier on him living in his house he has always known. You are going to be 300 yds away, which means you will go visit him a lot. It's not like he'll never see you, and as long as your parents like him that's what I would do.

I did a similar thing when I went to college. My elderly dachshund had some heart issues and was on regular medication for them. Even though I could have taken her we(family) decided it was best to leave her where she was most comfortable. I visited often and she didn't miss a beat. My dad ended up being her favorite lap to sit on.

Ditto to this, If your parents are willing to keep him I would keep him in his house that he knows, I bet hes just attached to your parents as he is to you and its not like your never going to be at your parents house again, I think he would be better off where hes at now and not be changing things up on him..

I agree, I answered before I saw you live with your parents. I imagine at his age he probably sleeps most of the time anyway.
