Does anyone use just sand in their stalls? If so, how does it work with horses that pee a lot? My horse is costing me a fortune in shavings with all that I'm stripping out everyday and hes only in a stall for 8 hours..if that! I will add that my stalls are dirt and we live in a very sandy area if that helps anyone!

we use sand in our stalls and it works great. Except just make sure that they have a mat or where they are eating has no sand since there is the chance they can sand colic after a while.

I have dirt in my stalls, not really sandy, they call it arena dirt.. I also have large rubber mats set down under their hay nets and under their feeders... I'd prefer shavings but my stalls are really large and I probably couldn't afford it! When it gets a little dusty in there I just wet it down and it's good to go.

We use masonry sand in our stalls. Makes for easy clean up and cost a lot less then sawdust. Also helps keep our gray horse cleaner. We get a truck load at a time, usually $5 a ton. We have concrete floors and use no mats. Never had issues with colic, however they almost always have hay in front of them.

We use sand with lime under it. Ours stay dry... but if I have a spot trying to get wet I sprinkle cat litter on it and it does the trick!

Thank you all!! I’m thinking sand jams the way to go. How does the sand do with the ammonia smell? Also, regarding the lime, how much did you put down? I just want to do this right!

We did felt, rock and then sand in stalls/runs and then mats in stalls. Worked well but was a lot of work having to replace the sand often. If I still lived at that place I would just concrete the stalls and lay down mats and good bedding. Would have been much much easier

Ā How long does the sand last in comparison to sawdust? I'm building and want to use sand on the barn when it eventually gets done. A load of sawdust will run around $250 delivered but the same amount of sand runs twice that at least. If it lasted longer though the sand might be worth it.
