Member Posts: 33	Recently purchased a mare raced on track when younger and has been started on barrels and poles. Previous rider uses different bits depending on what they were doing Regular every day a gag with chain bit. She chomps, seemed a little sensitive and welcomed some comforting rubbing around mouth when I took it out When I showed pleasure we always had great results with myler bits Any suggestions? I'm a rookie with all of this but stuff. When we were little we just used old curb bits!

Straight Shooter Posts: 5725 Location: SW North Dakota	While the previous owner's bit is always a good place to start, I REALLY believe finding the right bit has more to do with a rider's hands and how they operate. If you have a favorite bit that every horse seems to like, chances are that's because its a good fit for YOUR style, therefore more agreeable to the horse. As long as their teeth are in good shape, they are well adjusted and otherwise healthy and sound (yada, yada- the usual disclaimer), start with something relatively similar that you've have good results with before. Try her in the Myler. I have a tack room FULL of bits and literally use 3 of them. haha.

The One Posts: 7998 Location: South Georgia	Like the previous poster said, I tend to go for the same bit all the time. My favorite bit is a shanked Myler with a low/tilted port. I do everything in this bit. It makes horses soft. They stay calm in it. They are responsive, yet not afraid of it. Since I have used it on so many horses, I think the other poster may be right....the bit fits MY style.
