| For those of you who are running horses that had suspensory issues in the past any success stories or recommendations for therapy products, feed, shoes and protective boots? Do you run them in deep ground or should you avoid that? My gelding is coming back from being off with a suspensory injury in a front leg and I want to make sure Iām doing what I can to help prevent reinjury. Vet recommended ice after every workout but that was basically it.

Location: Arkansas | I don't want to steal your thread, but we have a horse with a torn suspensory, and I need advice on what others have done to help their horses heal. First vet didn't diagnose correctly, so we were behind from the get go, and of course that negated some of what we could have done for him when the injury was brand new. I would appreciate any and all ideas y'all have used. . . . |

| Mine was out a year, I did PRP, sweated with runners relief. Per my vet, I avoided deep ground, made sure he was warmed up good with lots of trotting and walking, I iced his legs after every run. |

| Novobrace was a life saver for our horse. My son's gelding shredded his suspensory 85% or more. Dr. Hand in Weatherford did the Novobrace and it's stronger and completely healed. It doesn't work for all horses in all situations, but it did for him. It's an injectable internal brace. Really cool technology. Good luck! |

| Wow, never heard of Novobrace before...that's some crazy technology! Mine was out after tearing his, and we have had quite a few on the track with this injury. Best thing to do is pretty much what your vet said! I would avoid deep ground for a while, until you know he can handle it (if) again. Took my guy over a year to be able to work back in to that, and he's not quite the same if the ground is deep =/ Like others have said, lots of trotting and warm up time, and long slow cool offs! I use magnetic boots before my run and ice after =] Good luck to you! Keep us updated <3 |

Location: Kansas | My little red rodeo horse has torn both front suspensories but really doesn't have any lingering issues from them. He tore them before I got him and had time off to heal, then went nutty at the gate and got sold super cheap.
I avoid deeper ground with him but mainly because he's 14 hands and gets swallowed by deep ground. He has turned out to be awesome in big pens with shallow hard ground and that filled the void in my rodeo team.
He gets warmed up slowly and cooled out thoroughly, and we use Back on Track wraps before running, polo wrap his front legs at the last minute, rip them off immediately, and he gets iced down after every rodeo run. So far we haven't had any problems with him, but we do make some extra efforts to take care of him. |

Location: Southern Indiana | My main thing is make sure the are properly leg up before going to a show. Pick and choose your ground and don't over do it at least for the first year back. Make sure they are shod on a regular schedule. Do something after riding/making a run whether that be cold hosing, ice, poultice, pht, bot etc. They all work and everyone has their preferences.
If it's gonna happen it will happen no matter what precautions you take but I think it's wise to nurse them for awhile until that ligament gains its strength back. |

Is this something that has to be done ASA the injury happens? |
