have a horse who has started bleeding this year. She has a chronic cough..always has. So had her scoped, she had a lot of inflammation, mucous, and blood in trachea. Gave her time off and started her on oxygen proB 2x. She has been on it several months, had her rescoped and her trachea looks great, and she hardly ever coughs now. Started running her on lasix, ran with 3cc a couple times with what seemed to be no problem, then she bled through it. So upped to 4cc last run and she bled a little, pinked tinted discharge from nose. Also gave her some wind aid too. So my question is, are there any products out there that help the lungs themselves??  I don’t want to have to keep increasing her dose of lasix and shes the only thing I have to compete on, I want to do what’s best for her. TIA.

4cc of Lasix isn't that much. Mine bled through up until I started him on 6cc. If I can keep him crazy fit I can bump him down to 4cc. I know a couple who have to run on 8cc to not bleed. Some vets will tell you 4cc is enough and some will tell you anything under 10cc is fine, its going to vary. One told me if he bleeds through 4cc he'll bleed through 10cc and he hasn't bled through 6cc so proves his theory wrong. If she's bleeding a little bit through 4cc I'd jsut bump to 5cc and see, maybe 6cc even. Whether you give them 4 or 6 the diuretic impact on their body is happening either way, another cc or two isn't going to make much of a difference. And as long as you properly support them on lasix when you give it, its safe to use. Just make sure you're making all the efforts to help them recover from it.

Thank you for your reply. Yes my vet has me giving plenty of electrolytes, minerals, and calcium to support her after lasix use. I’ve been wondering if I need to up her exercise routine but she seems pretty fit and recovers pretty quickly after a run. How long would you say you exercise for? Of course I know they are all different as to what works for each horse.

I've ridden 2 bleeders and I've found that I have to keep them in much better shape than a non bleeder. For the one I run now, he gets an hour, 4 days a week minimum. You have to do a lot of lung building with a bleeder. I can ride for 2 days a week and keep his muscles in shape, but he will bleed more if I run. It takes me about 2.5 months to get him in the shape I want. When we hit that peak he's a minimum of 25 minutes long trotting, 15-20 minutes loping at various speeds, and I make sure to do at least one sprint down the side of the arena each ride. Not full on, but as decent as I can as my arena isn't really even 90ft long I don't think. I walk for a warm up for 10 minutes minimum and walk out at the end for 10 minutes. Between some of the trotting and loping I'll do a minute or 2 walk to, just randomly. The other one I rode I was training for a friend and he needed ridden 6 days a week mentally or he was a dragon and we loped a lot. He's not running now because she didn't have the time to keep him mentally calmed down, he's one of those with no quit and needed an hour of loping to get his mind right, even now at 20 and she didn't have the time to put into him. He didn't bleed through more than 2cc when I was riding just because he was so fit. He was loping the 3D and with her she maybe rode 5 days a month and couldn't get him to run less than 5 seconds off because his brain wasn't connected and he bled on 6cc. So their fitness makes a huge difference

Thank you. I’ve had 2 others that were bleeders but were maintained eAsier than this one so that was my concern. Thank you for your time and response

We have had results with the Silver Horse Care Equine Respiratory Kit. We haven't had to use as much Lasix.

We have a bleeder, used to run on 4cc and now at 6cc. I also believe it depends on size of pen, Is the ground deep and how much they have to work for it.
Exercise is the key factor. But i am a true beliver, once a bleeder always a bleeder. Lasix is your go to. all horses are different. Sometime it is trial and error and than scope!

We give 6cc 3 hrs out. and 1 run only.
Goodluck.

The bleeder program with Oxygen is the 2X with the Bleeder stop. The 2X strengthens the lungs while the bleeder stop will help with the bleeding and inflammation. PM me if you have questions-I'm a rep.

This, my vet added  guanabenz when mine bled thru at 4cc, it calms him and helps keep blood pressure down.   He has not bled thru since adding this. I have not found any supplement that worked and I have tried them all.

I so wish we could use that at the track, I know it would help my nervous fillies.  I am going to give the lung health formula from Rebar Ranch a try since it won't test.  I have a huge mare that bleeds thru lasix and another filly that just bled in a work this morning, I will update when I see if this is going to work for my horses.

Be diligent in your respiratory treatments and I believe you'll notice a difference in your race horses. Rebar products are good.

I have had great success with THE Pulmonez.both with TB race horses and a barrel horse I had. Fortunately we do not have a bleeder now but I still use  THE Daily Edge Muscle Mass with Bleeder and Ulcer prevent. Works well for me
