Looking for tips and recommendations for bleeders. I'm currently using equiwinner patches and b-n-m paste, along with flair strips. She hasn't bled out with theses products but she's not clocking like she use to. It's like she runs out of air now. Looking for advice on something for air and a good exercise for building air

Ditto to the lasix, I have a bleeder tried all kind of products, had him scoped and even though he didn’t bleed out he was still bleeding- Lasix 4 cc, 2 1/2 hours out given IM and he was clocking again. Keep them in top condition, it will help.

Β If they are a diagnosed bleeder you need to use Lasix... Supplements do absolutely nothing to prevent a horse from bleeding. Some may help over the time with capillary elasticity but that is minimal. Lastly just because your horse doesn't "bleed out" does not mean they are not bleeding. Only a small percentage of bleeders actually bleed out their nostrils. A very large percentage of bleeders never show any blood in their nostrils but are still bleeding enough to cause an issue during a run. Please talk to your vet.

Over the years I've tried different supplements, but always go back to just using lasix.
Mine only gets 3cc IM 3-4 hours out and he's good to go.
I do not run him if he's out of shape. Period. Lots of loping/breezing to help strengthen his lungs...I say a lot, but with riding 5 days/week I probably breeze once/week, but still lope a lot.
I do like using something like Wind Aid or Flair strips to help him out, but don't rely on them.

Like others have said, not clocking is a sign of bleeding. Mine never bleeds out but if she quits me and doesn't keep a consistent speed the whole run, I know she has bled.

Mine is a bad bleeder (last fall was bleeding through 5cc of lasix with no supplements or other help).
I have her now on Bleeder Stop by Oxygen (been thinking of switching to Race Today by Vetline Equine) I love the Bleeder Stop but still feel like we need a little help.
I also have her on Respiratory Support from Simply Equine to help her out also.
I also give electrolytes 2 days before running, and the day(s) I run her, and the day after (if it's a big show two days after). I also give Wind Aide a few days before and the day I run (can also give ventipulmin or the new oxygen version oxypulmin). I also recently started running her with flair strips and have noticed a difference. She also stresses easily and that can contribute to bleeding sometimes so I give her 10cc of Equisure before loading in the trailer and every day after that while gone to settle her stomach and it helps too.

Also, no high hanging hay or feed. Horses are meant to eat off the ground and swallow at an upward angle. Not like us where we swallow down. So ALL my buckets are on the ground at home and she is turned out to not be in a stall where it can get dusty and mess with their upper resp. system. I have a barrel cut in half long ways as my feed trough and its tied very rednecked to the fence with hay string but it works! On the road I have one of those black rubber buckets on the ground for feed, a muck bucket for her hay (I break the flakes up and wet it to cut down on dust), and her water bucket is on the ground as well. Dust is your enemy as well.

For every day exercise, I try to ride or lunge her at least every other day for at least 20 minutes. I play music while I ride to help me keep track of the time. I walk in each direction to one song, trot the same, lope the same, trot the same, then walk for a song and if I have time or need to I will work her on the pattern. The more air you can get in their lungs the better.

A friend of mine just had hers scoped recently because she can be hit or miss on her runs sometimes. Some days she outruns everyone by half a second winning the whole 1st division, or she'll run in to 2D sometimes. Never bled out or coughed or even had a change in breathing after a run. After scoping her they found a lot of scarring and blood. She's a bad bleeder with no symptoms other than just wasn't clocking consistently. My black horse bleeds and he's bled out once and it was a tiny bit, a couple drips. He's never coughed or anything either, but he never fires. If I don't keep him super fit he clocks in the 4D but if he's fit he's always in the 3D money. I ride him 4 days a week for an hour and that's very light for him. When he's in good shape he's ridden 1.5-2 hours 5 days a week. Minimum of 20 minutes long trotting, 20 minutes loping, and at least 2 short breezes a week. When he gets that he can run on less lasix, now he gets more lasix. I don't have the time to devote 2 hours to riding him now when I have a new horse starting. I don't think there's really a good replacement for lasix and its super cheap too. $40 of Lasix lasts me the whole year
