I walked away from breeding a couple of years ago, and now I'm considering breeding a couple of my mares. But since I haven't been paying attention, I'm not sure what is even in demand as far as foals go. My main criteria is resale. I've got to be able to market these babies and sell at a profit. That being said, I am going to be on a budget, so the big big name guys are out! But I also know that you have to spend money to make money, so I'm not really looking at something that isn't well-known or up-and-coming. If these mares weren't half-siblings to my young stallion, I'd just breed to him. But I'm hoping that I can get some more babies out there that are related to him and help strengthen his mare family.

These are the mares:

This mare is by Rare Bar and out of a Vital Sign x BA75 mare. She tore up her stifle playing in her stall and was never even entered. I'd like to stick with straight running lines that are proven at the track and the arena for this mare. She is huge - 16+ hands and stout.

This mare is by Chasin Firewater and out of the same mare as above. She fractured a wing of her coffin bone as a baby. We tried to get her through her futurity year, but although she would work fine at home, it seemed to be the trailer ride that made her sore, so she never did perform well the few times she was entered. For this mare I want no BA75 (she's line-bred to him already) and no FWF. She is a smaller mare, so bone and good foot are important to me.

I'm not sure what your budget is, but Ivory James ($4000) would be my top choice for either mare. Here are a few others that I think would complement your two mares:

Best Advice, Corona Cartel x Sweet Advice by Bully Bullion ($1250 right now).

Brace For Bernal, Furyofthewind x Zoom Bracer by Shazoom ($1500).

BF Farm Boss, Hawkinson x Shirleys Strawfly by Strawfly Special ($2500).

ETA: I adore your stallion Vitalio! I really like Desirio, but I wasn't sure if he would fit your bill, since you already have a son.

The red and the fact you are breeding two unproven mares would lead me to say you should not be breeding.

I know that's not what you asked, but it's the truff

Ivory James is definitely on my "some day" list! I just think that if I'm going to spend the money on him it better be a more proven mare. Maybe some day these ladies will be producers and I can justify it! I raised these mares with the intention of proving before breeding. But then injuries took that plan and turned it upside down! They've been standing in the pasture for several years, I guess I was hoping that maybe time would heal, but it is apparent that they are only broodmare sound. So I guess I'd rather they be broodmares instead of pasture ornaments!

I'll take a look at the others you mentioned. If all of Desirio's offspring are like my stallion, I'd take a barn full. But he isn't well known in the barrel industry (hopefully my guy can help change that!), and because resale is so important I've got to find something that will sell.

Blunt, but honest!

My intentions were to prove these mare before breeding. But injuries have a way of changing plans! If they weren't own daughters with a nice female family, I wouldn't even consider it. So my options are to have some pasture ornaments for the next 20 years, or try to get them proven as producers. I'd rather take my chances at raising some nice babies out of them. I know at this point that foals out of them will not be in as high of demand as foals out of proven mares, but based on my experience in the breeding industry I know that I can cross them on the right stallion and at least break even, if not make a small profit.

I know that I don't have to defend my reasoning, but thought I would put that out there anyways!

I understand where you are coming from with trying to prove before breeding, and yes, life sometimes gets in the way- so it is good to have strong bloodlines to fall back on when you are in this industry to try and make a living. I think you are being reasonable in your thought process, hence having a budget and not blowing your mares out of proportion.

We would love to breed our TB mare to Ivory James... in a few years after she's proven herself as an athlete and a mother. Based on bloodlines alone, she would be a great cross, and we have that to fall back on if she gets hurt or doesn't perform well, just like you are saying.

There are plenty of mares that have gotten hurt and never been showed, and ended up out-producing themselves- heck, there are a TON of studs in the same boat. I think going into the horse breeding business with eyes wide open is better than going in blindly and going broke by trying to strike it rich.

I would say a son of Frenchmans Guy. There are plenty that have reasonable stud fees. A son of Dash Ta Fame. Again plenty out there. I got an opportunity to breed to Keep The Fame so had to go with that.

I am loving Freckles Ta Fame after seeing him run at the NFR... Vanila Viper and Magnum are at the top of my list too!
