My cousins son has been riding for about a years and half now and started roping. He bought him a older rope horse that’s suppose to be 21-22yrs old for him to learn more on. When he got here he had sores on his withers where they had just been roping on him. His withers/shoulders are hollow due to age. In my mind if we can either get a pad with built in shims or just use the ones to lay over the pad it would fix the sore problem. Maybe I’m wrong so correct me if so. But if his withers are hollowed out that isn’t letting the saddle weight distribute properly causing pressure on the sides of the wither bones which result in sores. I know in my mind what would fix the problem but I don’t know how to explain it to a beginner to a point he would understand. Especially after he spent a few thousand on a roping saddle because I said it was a good one and a few hundred on a 5 Star roping pad.

RE: How do you explain saddle fitting to beginners.
The easiest way I've found to explain saddle fit is to show them. Saddle the horse like you normally would and then run your hand up under the front swell and then down the bars of the saddle. If its squeezing or pinching your hand, its probably squeezing or pinching your horse also.
