Location: Alabama | I know there’s tons of stuff on the market for bleeders, i also know there’s a lot on the markets that’s not as affective as lasix.
Has anyone had success with any of the lasix alternatives?
The horse I’m asking for isn’t a bad bleeder, but bad enough that if affects his performance at multi day shows & in the heat. |

| No, I have tried just about everything, given him 6 months off while supplementing with products and still bled , did not bleed out but scope showed he bled. He is considered a mild bleeder by my vet. |

please make sure your friend gets a scope after she startes solely using equipulmin. I contacted equipulmin asking if they have any studies or cases of horses going completley off of lasix since some reps were advising people they could get off of lasix. Well they said no. They told me they were sorry I was hearing such information that they advise I still work with my vet. Honestly the only thing that will "help" prevent a bleed is fitness, lasix and kentucky red. Herbs have been debunked. I guess I am not trying to tell your friend what to do but stopping lasix may cause more harm with potential lung damage from scaring and infection then anything. I dont feel it is worth the risk. I wish all the companies saying using their supplements will allow the owner to pull their horse off of lasix would knock it off because people who are just learning their horse is a bleeder tend to try all of them before finally figuring out lasix and fitness is the only thing that is going to really help. |

Very well said! I agree with this. |

| Build up their wind, swim them, and short breezes ONCE you make certain you have bleeding or infection under control. But DONT ever quit using lasix because you heard some supplement works or you "think" it does *eye roll* |

Location: Back Creek Valley!!! | I have a question... I dont mean to steel your post. (sorry) I have a bleeder. He runs on 6cc of lasix 3 hrs out. Thats for a big pen. I want to cruise him thru a set. Run hard to 123 and pull up after 3rd. Make sure we have our ducks in a row. Just like a exhibition at home. Would you still give him the 6 cc of lasix or back him down a bit? (I dont want him to bleed!!) TIA |

Location: Alabama | Good question, I’d like to know also, I’m totally new to this whole bleeder thing, so I’m basically trying to eat my ducks in a row for what to do and what not to do ?? |

I would still use lasix, but maybe back off to 4cc 4 hours out. Race track rules are 4 hrs out for Lasix. You could actually split your lasix also. Half IV, half IM. |

If I were really going to let mine run, I'd give him his lasix. To me, the hassle of it for a practice run is easier than causing him to bleed.
Now, I will let mine cruise through without anything, but he will cruise quietly...not fight me to run, and not putting out any "effort" to go fast, just an easy speed for him.
To answer the original question...
I have tried a few alternatives over the years. He bled out on a couple, coughed on a couple, and the rest I was just paranoid on.
I've never had any problems from using lasix, other than the inconvenience of pee everywhere. |

Location: Florida | Many years ago I used coffee creamer (cremora). A couple of tablespoons in feed twice a day and it did help quite a bit. The palm tree oil and fat thickens the blood just a little. But, does make you wonder about our morning coffee..... |

Use a lil guanzabenz (my go to bc this is what it was designed for) or ace for cruise or exhibition it will allow a bleeder to do it calmly, quietly, and their heart rate wont get up.
Using these are much easier on a horses system especially if giving lasix multiple days

Location: MS | Research all the ingrediants in your supplements. Alot of vitamins thin blood. The first thing I did when mine started was load him with vit C. It thins blood. My horse got worse with all the supplements. |

Location: In my own little world | I find that interesting that EP told you this, especially since it is part of their advertising that it "helps stop bleeding". If that is the case it is false advertising on their part. I can tell you I personally know of a good 5 bleeders who have come off of Lasix since using it. They have all continued to work with their vets and are scoped to make sure they are not bleeding internal within the respiratory system. I also know of others who use it in conjunction with Lasix or Ventipulmin and have back off the dosage of them. But as always, it is important to work with your vet regarding all issues and stay on top of it if you feel it is serious. I worked with my clinic for 2 years trying to solve coughing issue and some bleeding with extrenuous exercise. They could never find anything; Ventipulmin did nothing, never bled enought for Lasix, tried all the other OTC breathing products and finally came across EquiPulmin shortly after it was approved for use in the US. It gave me my horse back. It worked great for me. But just like people, every horse is different and what works for one may not work for another. |

I asked for studies and clinical trials and they said they had none and were not meaning to advertise it would replace Lasix but instead help. I have the messages to prove it. It is just herbs. I do believe it will help along with Lasix. I have used it with Lasix. However I have a young friend that is 16 who found out that her horse bled last year (just internally) and she started using equipulmin instead of Lasix. Her horse started running poorly. A few of us had to tell her that it will not replace the Lasix she was giving. How important Lasix is for a bleeder. She was trying to get off Lasix because she thought she was seriously hurting her horse each time she used it. That is the kind of information out there that needs to be fixed. Lasix is a potentially damaging drug due to dehydration but if used correctly it can be very helpful. Companies that are supplements should not be pushing they will replace a fda approved drug. There can be serious consequences if people believe them. Also by law they can't advise that. |
