Location: California | First off <------- that's how I feel about this "situation". Link below if you don't want to read my rant lol
I'm from Salinas, Ca in which the California Rodeo takes place. Every year they have a huge parade that basically everyone can enter and ride in. They have a little competition based off different groups & pretty much just how well they match.
We obviously have a huge latin community over here & the rodeo includes a "charro" section in the parade. They typically have them go last, because stallions and all. The parade only allows stallions if they are charros.
NOW these Charros are fed up because they want more time to perform for the crowd. They want 15-30mins to show case their horses ability. UHM SINCE WHEN WAS A PARADE A HORSE SHOW?!
AND helllooooo this rodeo is not just some fiesta, it's a PRCA RODEO!!! (also talks of adding a Mariachi)
ugh I'm just ranting, I think it's ridiculous. & before anyone wants to say I'm overstepping boundaries, I'm educated in this "Charro" world, and have been part of it myself. I think the rodeo should stay a rodeo, and if they want a charro competition, then to have their own. Just like eventing & dressage are completely separate.
am I totally out there for feeling this way!?

To me it is wrong to come in and join in on an existing event like this rodeo...and then threaten to throw your sucker in the dirt and ask all of the people of a certain ethnicity to boycott if they will not change the original event to suit you. Go start and host your own Charro event/ Charreada Mr. Velasquez. |

This. I am a Native Californian, too, and fee the same way. The rodeo has it's own traditions and there are nothing wrong with them. If the Charros want to do it differently they should start their own thing and not force others to change theirs. What if all the nut job animal activists do not want them to use horses at all and then force THEM to use stick horses? (It could totally happen...this IS California- land of nuts and fruits)THEY would not like it AT ALL. |

| Our town's PRCA rodeo is held in conjunction with numerous Native American festivities, as our county encompasses a reservation, and the stampede grounds are partly owned by the Tribe and the city. They have also been incorporating Charro events, and a "Mexican rodeo" of sorts, but that is held at its own time, just like the pow wow dancing and everything else has its own time slot.
I can understand where you are coming from, because yes, they are different events and one shouldn't try to overpower the other. The Charro folks need to recognize that without the California rodeo happening, there would be no parade, let alone a Charro space to walk in it. |
