How much rest are you guys giving your youngsters. Right now i'm on a one day on one day off program. Just wondering what people are doing to keep their young one's happy and sound.

My 3yos that know what I want them to know (basics) get 3x week, sometimes 4. My learning 3yo (the one I just got isn't broke at all) is getting saddled as much as possible until she's loping circles. That being said as much as possible is when its above 45 outside cause Im a weenie so.... like 4x maybe 5x per week. That's getting saddled, not necessarily rode.

I just brought my soon to be 3yr old soon. I have been working with him everyday since he got home Monday. I rode him yesterday for literally 2minutes. When I get him W/T/C, I will probably back off to 4 days a week. Just want to get those 30 first days done with.

My 4 year old was a finished Barrel horse at 3. Literally entered his first barrel race on his 3 year old Birthday and won it. He was just a natural and continues to make the same beautiful run each and every time. However, he is YOUNG and therefore I only ride him every other day just to keep him legged up, nothing training or strenuous. He gets 2 full rounds of adequan per year as per my vet to maintain his perfect young joints, and I just started him on Exceed 6 way as a daily. I have 2 finished barrel horses so I ride one and lead the other and switch off. I only run him once a month usually.

I feel like mine get a lot farther faster with consistent daily riding. So I ride them 5-6 days a week. Once they reach certain benchmarks I'll give them 2-4 weeks off., then go back to riding consistently again. Most of them come back from a break even better, refreshed, sharper and ready to absorb more.

Occasionally I'll have one that doesn't do well with an extended break though. They come back fresh and in need of a good tune-up. They'll take up to a week to get back to the point where we left off. I try to adapt my strategy for these. Give them more frequent 3 day breaks. As 3 days is about all they can handle being "off" before they start going backwards in their training.

Same. Consistent riding with long breaks every so often.
