Wife and I are headed to Kauai for work this thursday.  We will have 2 free days.  For those that have been there, what did you enjoy?

We spent a week there last October. Loved it! Very peaceful and restful. There is only about 140 miles total of highway so easy to "do the drive". And the speed limit is 50 mph. Top speed 50! But you drive at 35 - 40 most of the time. We would get excited when the speed limit upped to 50!! We downloaded the Shaka Hawaii app and used their GPS based driving tours to see the island -- and many out of the way things we would have missed otherwise. There is a charge for this app, but minimal and totally worth it!

Our favorite activities:
- helicopter tour of island (we flew via Safari Helicopters - we liked their safety record and they provided first-class service; we bought our tour video -- it cost $20 - we booked this tour online before we left on the trip and took advantage of the substantial online discount)
- KiPu Ranch ATV adventure - loved this one a lot - we were surprised by how fast we zipped around the trails -- and the scenery was INCREDIBLE -
- Luau at Kalamaku plantation (https://www.luaukalamaku.com/) - we did the VIP Plantation Owners dinner + Luau -- the service and meal were terrific and we had front row seating at the luau show.... fun evening - very memorable

So - these were our top three activities. We stayed at the Grand Hyatt Kauai in an ocean front room -- pure heaven.

If there is an activity you do not want to miss I highly advise you book and pay before your trip to assure you get the day and time you can do the activity. Cruise ships come in at the local harbor and their guests book up everything quickly -- We booked the above three activities about a month prior to our trip and took advantage of the online savings on all.....

We did not take a snorkel trip -- the wave were huge while we there -- in fact, the beaches were red flagged the entire time -- Kauai is not the best island for snorkeling but with right conditions you can have a good trip. Husband did a half day fishing trip and had a good time in spite of poor fishing -- those nasty waves again.

There are zip lines, too, if you wish to do that. Hubbie and I are old folks (retired) so we passed on that one, but we saw folks having a ball doing it --

We are already planning a return to Hawaii -- to the Big Island later this year to see the volcanoes.

Have fun -- and watch out for chickens.

Haha  Yes, I've been warned about the chickens.

We are also staying at the Grand Hyatt Kauai.  We have booked a snorkel trip, and zip line excursion.  I thought the helicopter tour sounded fun as well.  We will probably do that, just for the view.  On the ATV trip is it guided or did they let you just go and do your thing?  I'm not a big fan of guides, and following in a line.

Thanks for sharing your experience.  I appreciate it!

Spent a week there last year, my favorite thing (besides just relaxing on the beach) was a all day catamoran tour. It was awesome. We went with Kauai sea tours on the NaPali coast. We snorkled, were fed and coctails, saw whales, dolphins and turtles.

How large was the group on the catamaran?

The KiPu Ranch ATV tour is guided -- and I will tell you my husband felt like you do - he was NOT happy I had booked it as he is not a follower either -- and envisioned a pokey, dusty, boring head-to-tail ride. HOWEVER, it was his favorite adventure! He drove and I was his passenger. Our guides were knowledgeable and funny -- and we drove fast up / down and all around -- through mud, water, etc. -- all over that ranch. Husband stated several times how much fun he was having - and even said, "I'd do that again." We had a rockin' rollin' great ride.

The chickens -- there is no way to complete describe the chickens..... you will never forget the chickens. Never. Our first moments on the island involved keeping a flock of the cute feathered fowl from getting into our rental car with us..... and so it began.

Don't miss a bowl of Loco Moco -- just to say you tried it. My husband ate Poke every day. Every single day. I did not.

Again - have a great time -- you will really enjoy the Grand Hyatt -- such fabulous service -- and a beautiful property. Don't miss the lagoon!

Probably about 25/30 people . The catamaran was large.
