Neck rein vs Direct rein?

How many of you feel its important to have a horse that neck reins in barrel racing? Im talking only barrel horses obviously. Back in the 70's and 80's everyone neck reined in barrel racing no one direct reined in the turns and they used very stiff hackamores or roping bits. THings have evolved but I was just curious how many of you still compete and your horses neck rein only.
Thanks

So neck reining could mean many different things. For me neck reining is a trail riding thing. I want my horse to move away from pressure but the closer to the head the more I want just the front to move and further back I want a full side pass. The reins do tend to touch the neck but the nose tips in as well so for most instances the horse moves before the reins touch because of my feet/weight etc. H

I do not want to run at a barrel and have to move my hand completely across their neck for them to give me a pocket.

I read this twice before deciding how to respond. The answer is very gray--not black and white for me. I really like a horse that is fancy broke. With that being said, I ride more with my seat and legs. My hands are the last resort. On the barrel pattern, I never really use either direct rein OR neck reining. I don't turn my horses with my hands, but instead, I use my seat ques and legs. On a barrel turn, I only just lift my inside rein and hold it over the center of the neck. My horse will know to turn the barrel and my legs will guide it...not my reins. Outside of the area, I want my horses to respond equally well to both direct and neck reining, but again, I'm using my legs to assist.
So, to answer your question: neither..., and both. LOL
