I need your opinions! I Have an off the track race horse, and he has always understandably leaned on the bit the whole year I have had him . I have tried multiple bits, But just cant seem to find the 'perfect' one. I have worked for months and months with softening and he is just fine until we do anything. I am currently running him in a short shank combo bit which has seemed to help a ton. Please let me know if any of you guys have any suggestions!

What mouthpiece does he seem to lean on the least? I've heard square snaffle mouthpieces help out with that. Also some horses are just that way and are hard to get the habit out of it.
I know it's also "tabboo" or whatever, but you could use a bicycle chain bit. That will get one to stop pulling too.

LOTS and LOTS of backing. Not using your legs like traditional backing but using your hands. IMMEDIATE release when he steps back. He needs to learn the release is in the backing off the bit. Move up to backing squares and circles.
I also use a long shank bit so they are less likely to get into a tugging match like can happen with a ring bit.
