I don't believe just anybody should adopt a wild mustang. I know I don't have good enough facilities or the extra time to safely care and train a wild animal. Maybe if they were already trained to lead and were comfortable with humans I might, but wait, I am doing the majority of raising my grandson, so no, I don't have the time either.
I think the time issue is one that most people over look.
So no amount of money would get me to take a wild horse on. It just wouldn't be fair or in their best interest, IMO.

We are in the heart of "mustang" country.  Many people I know have addopted them only to send them to slaughter a year later because they didn't have time to deal with them either.  It's a joke to call this management.

I see many lawsuits and wrongful death suits coming...
I also see lots of kill buyers lining their pockets...

I have no idea, really. It is a sad situation, but the government can't keep feeding them all and if people are not adopting them, the only solution I see is putting them down.
I hope someone else comes up with a better solution, and if they do, share it, please.

Capture permits.  Back in the old days they would offer capture permits.  They had a specified season you could chase and catch a horse.  Lots of ranchers around here still ride those oldie but goodie horses that were caught 20+ years ago.  The herds still need some sort of cull method in addition to thinning by removal of "desirable" animals.  This way people could go catch a yearling instead of being offered to addopt a 9 yo new gelded horse, that would kick your face off if you get close.

It also kept the Feral horses warry of people.  This kept the rancher and horses from fighing over the same blade of grass.

This was also a really fun time.  To go out and chase a feral horse accross the desert at full speed.  When I was real young I'd ask my dad to take me to do this for my birthday.  We never wanted to catch any. We figured if we could touch it, we could have caught it, so that was the game.

Last year here in Iowa they had some radio ads trying to get people to keep some of them in feedlots. The rate was $5.00 Per Head Per day. You had to take 100 hd at a minimum. All mares or all geldings.  1 year contract at first and then you could renew for 4 more years or 9 more years. That figures out to $1,825 per hd  a year. So if they can get someone to take some for a $1,000  they are ahead the first year by $825  and home free after that.

I have to disagree with this concept.  So people would go out and catch the "desireables" leaving the "undesirables" to continue reproducing?  If it is a matter of wanting a desireable mustang, there are plenty of all ages already captured in the holding facilities.
Unfortunately I do not have an answer, but there definitely has to be some sort of cull/ number management measure.

The level of desirable will directly correlate with age.  You dont get a mustang for its looks or breeding.  Like I said above,  there will still be some that need to be culled, preasure and nature may be the answer to that.

Sell hunting licenses for them. Just like when deer or elk over populate. Or maybe send the wolves they've turned loose in the forest land down there. Win Win.

The BLM needs to get a handle on the reproduction situation.  There a gazillion mustangs warehoused in Oklahoma and every pasture you drive by has mares with colts at side.

I will be the bleeding heart and say I don't like the "kill em" theory but has anyone else noticed how poorly advertised this project is? For me, (MN) we don't live in mustang country and I haven't been able to find one even eligible for adoption. With that said, I am in no position to adopt/train one but for those who might be, it would help with a more user friendly system.
