I have been doing a ton of research on PHT vs BOT boots. I am very torn between saving my money and just getting the PHT or being able to purchase BOT much sooner. I realize that they both utilize different technologies, but my uncertainty for which to purchase really comes down to the summer heat. I am in Oklahoma so it can easily get to 100 degrees. For those of you that use BOT boots, is there a cut off temperature you flat will not use BOT boots at all or do you feel comfortable putting them on, say, 30 minutes before the race even in extreme temps? I have found several threads/articles talking about how the summer heat can impact BOT products but nothing that is really definite on when it is not safe to use them as opposed to the PHT being safe all the time. I definitely don't want to cause any injuries which is why I am so back and forth. Thank you for any insights!!

Love my BOT products. When it is hot, I will only use them at night when it cools off. If it's hot, I'll use them no more than an hour, usually to just haul in and off as soon as we get to the race. I find that I do get some effect with 30-60 minutes of use if needed, but if they wear them all night I find the effect stays longer. I have a PHT Magnacu blanket, and it sits in storage while the BOT sheets get used every night. I haven't sold it yet because it cost so much to get and it needs repairs cause it tore so easily. I've visually seen BOT pull out swelling in legs. I use the quick wraps on lower legs. One mare bowed her tendon and lived in them, if they came off the swelling returned in hours. Another mare stocked up in all 4 legs after being vaccinated and a hot day the day after being vaccinated, and I noticed a difference within an hour of having them on. Alternated between cold hosing and the boots, but used the boots first. I did walk her in them for 20 minutes and it was a night and day difference from putting them on to after that 20 mins (she was in no way lame, short strided or sore, her stride was regular and she felt fine, just was swollen). I don't find they make my horses legs any hotter than if I were to put anything else on them. When I feel heat from inflammation, it does warm it up a bit, but as soon as the inflammation starts moving, the heat cuts back.

I really like Draw it Out liniment gel though for when it's really hot and I don't want to put them on and cold hose/ice packs aren't available. I don't use BOT at the same time as the liniment nor for a few days afterwards, but DIO gel seems to work really well too if you're looking for another affordable option. One of my horses will NOT wear boots on her hind legs without throwing an absolute fit, so I can only use liniment on her hind legs. She likes to kick things with her hind legs and swell up, and the combo of DIO and walking works it out usually.

I'm in Southern California and it's not uncommon to hit triple digits by early morning in the summer, last summer we were usually 110+ through the day. Cooled down to around 70-80 at night and I'd used BOT then. When it is hot, I'll use BOT before and ice after. I do pull boots as soon as they're off the trailer, so their legs get to cool off before the SMBs go on before our runs.

Thank you so much for this reply!! It was exactly what I was looking for. I am really leaning towards BOT for a number of reasons but I am overly cautious in products I have never used before and BOT's "just use personal preference" in their website FAQ in terms of summer heat was no where near the information I wanted. I love Draw It Out!! I use the gel and the spray right now, but I am hoping that by purchasing some of the therapy boots, my DIO costs will be cut down.

Personally I wouldn’t use pht in extreme heat either! My horses sweat in their blankets when it’s 85+ and sunny. If they are in a stall under a fan it’s ok, but not when tied to the trailer. I Have used bot quick wraps for injuries in the summer when my horse was stalled. Personally I just prefer cold water, poultice, or liniment when it’s hot! The bot are handy for milder weather. I have seen bot pull swelling out when the pht didn’t. I just have the old pht 3n1s. The newer pht leg stuff is just more than I’m willing to pay. I like my bot quick wraps. They are good thing to invest in and they are affordable.

My horses would sweat just as much in direct sunlight with the PHT as they did with the BOT... My TB tends to run hot so I have to take her sheet off above 75, but the only place I have really ever gotten sweat is on the shoulders where there is the nylon like fabric, even when hauling my other horses with them on in a hot trailer. My horse I used the PHT on would be so hot and sweaty under the magnets, I touched them and they were burning hot. That's when the sheet got moved to storage... I also have a PHT fly mask and poll pack sitting in storage, never noticed a difference after my horse wore the fly mask for a few months, but when I put the poll/forehead cover on that BOT offers, noticed my horse was much more relaxed and more focused warming up at a race. Also didn't shake her head as much as she had been doing. I need to get the poll strap because the whole cap was just a bit too much up there for her. My horses seem to respond better to BOT no matter what part of their body I'm using it on.

On a side note however, I have heard that the Prof Choice and Benefab (without Magnets) sheets are thinner and don't trap heat like the 2 layers of fabric does with BOT. For me it's not been a concern, but in case anyone is looking for options... I personally like the fit and durability of BOT and that's why I keep going back.

To the OP, I've had "warm" legs under wraps, but unless I am pulling out swelling, I've never had sweat under wraps. Even then it's minimal if any. The padding seems to help that. I do know with my hock wraps, they're more neoprene like with the layer of ceramic fabric over them, and I do get sweat with those. I want to try the royal hock wraps they offer as those have the same padding as the quick wraps. Didn't know it was an option until after I tried mine lol. Same with the sheets, only under the nylon shoulders do I really get sweat. The fabric BOT uses is very breathable IMO. I would try it on your horse and see what they say they need. Each of mine sweats a little differently under it, but never had anything bad other than increased effect ;)

Something to consider; I know legs are different than the back, but they make the saddle pad liners, and I know mine gets full of sweat, but that just means I don't leave it on longer than 2-3 hours because as far as I'm aware, the movement and sweat increases the effect because it's more heat to reflect, so you just use it for less time to get the desired effect.

It was in the mid 90’s here all weekend and we hit 2 rodeos...I hauled with my PHT sheet on with minimal sweat. If I’d been in the perfs I probably wouldn’t have used my BOT boots. I was in slack so once the sun went down and it cooled off into the 80’s and dropping I put them on, for maybe an hour or so.

I refuse to put the BOT boots on anything in the summer.  Way too hot.

Example:
Friday 5/25 (Tulsa OK) - Temp was 90 outside.  Trailer ride was 4.5 hours.  Horses have the same sweat tendancies.

Horse 1:  PHT Magna CU wraps along with his blanket.  Got to the rodeo and his legs were dry and he had one sweat mark on his chest from the blanket.
Horse 2:  BOT boots on all 4 & no blanket. He was dripping wet and his legs were soaked.  The boots were wet enough to squeeze sweat out of.

So from my experience I will only use BOT when it is cool. :)

When it gets hot my horses do seem to only sweat where the binding is and under the neoprene of the magnets on my Magnacu blankets. But its enough that I take them off so they can stay cooler. This is in mild heat. When its so hot you can stand there and sweat they definitely don't wear anything. I have never had my magnets get hot. I do not have a BOT blanket, but I do have a Benefab (with magnets) and its about the same as the magnacu. I think with any therapy product you just have to keep an eye on them and use good judgement. When its so hot I don't want to wear hardly any clothes....I don't make my horses wear them LOL

I love the BOT quick wraps I have. However, I just don't use them when it is really hot.

They don't "generate" heat, but you are simply putting thick material over a leg. You'd start to sweat, the same way if you put on a winter jacket when it's 90 degrees out. The winter jacket is not generating heat, but you are going to get hot and sweaty. Same principle.
