Location: MN | How many of you have your horses in aluminum shoes? Did you notice a difference going from steel shoes to aluminum? Advantages/disadvantages to them? |

| I started mine in Aluminum shows 7+ years ago. They are lighter which helped him move better but they wear out faster so I only get about 2 sets with them before buying another. However, they made such a difference, I couldn't switch back to steel on him now. |

Ive been running alluminum shoes for 8+ years now. I use the Thorobred (yes its spelled this way) Queen plates on all 4 feet. I order directly from TB.
Advantages:
I love the 7 nail holes on each side, allows for a thinner hoof wall to not be in the same nail holes every time and you can spread the nails out according to the hoof. Also allows for better support of the wall.
I love a full rim and feel my horses can handle any ground
Easy to shape and will also BEND if they over reach (less stress on soft tissue of the leg)
Disadvantages:
They wear faster on hard surfaces.... I always use soft rides on gravel or concrete/asphalt
If you ride on rocky trail rides, they will wear faster
More expensive then your standard steel rim
Nails required to hold shoe are smaller and come out a lot easier (tweak easier)
Over all, I love my shoes and my vet highly recommends them. My farrier has been great to work with. My horses stay sound, and they are ALL 1-2D horses...

| Have aluminum shoes put on an older retired horse. He has thin hoof walls and has to have fine nails. Farrier put aluminum shoes on the horse I ride yesterday because he felt he needed fine nails. First of all I never have shoes reset, farrier always puts on new shoes. I really don't see much difference. I have used them on and off for the past 20 years or so. I did have one farrier that was not real good at putting on aluminum shoes and did have some problems. It was more of a farrier issue than an aluminum shoe issue. |

My gelding likes to bend his steel shoes... Im just wondering if aluminums will hold up to his nonsense! What size nails do these Thorobred shoes take? |

Location: Under The Big Sky Of Texas | I like aluminum shoes but my horse would twist off a shoe during a run sometimes, the nails were smaller and thiner so had a hard time keeping them. The aluminum shoes are so easy to bend and wear out faster, after about a year I went back to the steel shoes. I agree on the farriers you have to have a farrier that knows how to use them, aluminum shoes are not a easy shoe to work with. |

| I have been using Kerckhaert kings plates for the last 8yrs or so and love them. My farrier loves them they shape easy with out going weird like some will but any farrier should be able to work with them. My horses feet grow fast so I shoe every 5 weeks so never worry about them wearing out too fast. I won't go back to steel, I like the lighter weight, seem better on hard ground and have horses actually run faster and not a fluke because they changed back to steel for a short time and horse got slower went back to aluminum and times were faster again.
