Location: Missouri | My daughter is 19 going on 20 now and she's ready for her 1st trailer, but also needs a full size truck. Having trouble deciding which comes first, the truck or the trailer? She is going to have to make payments and I told her I would co-sign on a SMALL loan, and this will help her start to establish credit as well.
She has a small Ford Ranger that we could sell or trade for monies towards a 1/2 ton truck. I have a 1 ton that she could use to pull with, but I also haul so it might not always be available. There might be occasions when we are going on the same day, but different directions.
So which would you get first? |

| I would get the truck first since there may be conflicts using your truck. |

Well we are looking a small 2 horse and I think a 1/2 would be okay. Maybe a little slower up hills, but okay. |

I would go with a 3/4 not a 1/2, 3/4 would be safer. |

| Get her a truck with Horse Racks in the back. Booom, problem solved.
Side Note: Coburn Bradshaw, the Saddle Bronc Rider, always drove his dads old dodge with racks in the back. That was his main driver in high school. It keeps them humble.

| 1/2 ton will be ok, just make sure the trailer has good brakes and adjusted properly. It should stop the truck without locking up the wheels on the trailer. Then when the trailer is loaded I would adjust my gain .5 up.
Most people drive around with improperly adjusted trailer brakes and don't even know it. Pulling with a half ton it's going to be very important that they are. |

Location: OH. IO | TRAILER FIRST.If you get truck first you are limited on trailers.buy trailer first and get the truck you need to pull it and STOP it safely.I wouldn't put my kid in a half ton truck pulling a trailer. But that's just my opinion. |

Location: Arkansas | My daddy deer hunted with an older gentleman who loaded his horse and dog into the back of his truck every deer season and stayed at camp til end of season. Daddy said when it came time to go home, he would tell the horse and dog to "load up"----horse always beat the dog into the truck!!!! This was many many years ago, but Daddy still talks about it. . . . |

| Whatever you find the best deal on first ;)
We got the trailer first because we knew the truck we wanted and was waiting on the kid too come down on price. Took probably six months but we got the truck.
I did learn more things to look at buying a trailer first. Always pull the mats. |

Truck you can get an older trailer, but having a truck that doesn't run or with safety issues won't get even the best trailer down the road.

Location: Missouri | See I was thinking Trailer, because she can use my truck, unless I'm using it and we haul together all the time anyway. That way she'd get used to pulling a trailer with my truck, which is a 1 ton dually. Overkill for what we are shopping for in a trailer, but I want her to learn how to pull one first. I went ahead and joined a rodeo association with her this year so we could continue to haul together. Probably once she gets her own rig I'll go back to jackpots, but she's all in on this rodeo life, lol. Unless my colt suddenly becomes on fire! Then maybe I'll step up the rodeo game, lol.
I think I'll pass on the pics ya'll are sharing! Lord! |

Location: Gainesville, TX | My husband and I haul a half ton (Toyota Tundra) and two horse slant frequently, including through DFW traffic which is SO MUCH FUN. We have for the last 7 years. Make sure your brakes are good and kept in good shape. Don't try to drive 90 MPH. Give people plenty of space in front of you. It has worked fine for us. |
