| I’ve heard differing opinions on dry spots from a saddle. I would agree with not wanting any dry spots at all but I have also heard if the dry spots are larger, they are ok because it’s spread out across a larger area and not just one small sharp pressure point. What are your opinions?
Asking because I bought a nice double J a couple years ago that I had fitted by someone and we both agreed it was a nice fitting saddle for my mare. She has had the past couple years off from running so she is a little ‘heavier’ now than she was back then. She is now getting dry spots from the saddle. They are larger spots. |

| I’ve been working with Wendy at Burns saddlery to fit my colt. She said that if the horse isn’t sore, and the dry spots are the size of your hand and the shape/position if the crown of the tree, generally nothing to get too worked up about.
The danger in that is that a large dry spot can hide a small pressure point, so make sure you’re checking for soreness and pressure.
Have you been using the same pad the whole time? It’s possible that your pad has developed a hard spot or needs replaced. Or if the mare has filled out that you need a thinner pad. |

Does she still have a bit of weight to lose yet? I'd maybe wait and see if the dry spots change much, if she does need to lose a bit more weight.
Do you want to post pictures (or text me some?)? Best to have them with the bare saddle on her back, no cinch and no pad. And see how it looks.
In general, larger spots are "better" than small spots. Just kind of depends how the saddle looks on her too.
I feel your pain. The new saddle I bought Shotgun, I've decided doesn't fit him quite right. Off saddle searching we go again!! (Hey, wanna swap? LOL )

Location: Under The Big Sky Of Texas | What kind of pads are you useing, how thick are the pads and have you changed pads after the couple of years of not running? Did you buy the saddle when the mare was young like a 4 or 5 to 8, alot of times these horses backs change so much as they age and the saddle may not be a good fit anymore,  |

| Same pad. It is a 3/4” 5 Star. Saddle was purchased about 3 years ago when horse was 8, so she’s 11 now. I will have to get photos taken. She is definitely not in the ‘running shape’ she was in at time of purchase with all the time she has had off, so she does have a few more pounds to lose. |

I would try a 1/2" 5 star and see how the saddle fits with it. Since your saddle is a good fitting saddle a 1/2" may be what you are needing. |
