 Brains Behind the Operation...

Location: Arizona | I know this is a long shot, but thought I'd put out some feelers. Some of you may remember the few times I've mentioned my grandpa's old stallion, Hez Sweet, who as far as I know is the last intact son of Hempen still live and kicking (Hez Sweet just celebrated his 36th birthday this February).
My grandpa is 88 years old now; has had both hips and one knee replaced, and last weekend fell and had to have a surgical repair done on his right hip replacement because it fractured his femur. He tearfully admitted to my mom a couple days ago that he just can't handle his horses anymore and would like to find homes for them.
My mom is keeping old Hez Sweet at her house, where he can peacefully live out his life, as well as one old gelding for my grandpa to fuss over. We think we have a home for his "younger" stallion lined up. Which leaves his two mares (mother and daughter).
The older mare is named Give And Take, she's double bred to Hez Sweet. She's 21YO, has had 3 foals, but has not been bred since she foaled her last one in 2006. She never had any breeding/foaling issues, my grandpa just finally realized that he couldn't keep up with raising and training foals anymore and stopped breeding. She has been barren for a long time now though, so I'm not sure what her reproductive soundness status is.
The younger mare is a 12YO daughter of Give And Take and Hez Sweet named The Mind Reader. Yes, this makes her triple bred Hez Sweet; no that was not a breeding my mom or I supported; but trust me when I tell you NOBODY tells my grandpa what to do. She's a maiden mare, has never been bred.
Both mares are pretty much just halter broke (Give And Take was broke to ride in her younger days, but it's been a good 15+ years since she's packed a saddle). The Mind Reader's handling experience has pretty much just been being led from corral to turnout, infrequent trimming, and a couple dates with the veterinarian (wire cut on her RF heel bulb, and a sarcoid removal from above her right eye several years ago). Both mares have permanent papers.
It's been awhile since I've seen theย mares in person and the only pics I have are from Feb 2016, but I will post those here (as well as their pedigrees and a couple pics of the grand old man, Hez Sweet). I will be going out there next weekend and can get updated pics then if anyone is interested.
Not looking for any money, would just like to find good homes for these girls. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Edited to add: The mares are located in Queen Creek, AZ.

| I would take the in a minute but just bought a broodmare and am overloaded. Havenโt had rain in a couple of months and no grass. It is so hard to find homes for horses where people follow through on there โpromiseโ to take care of them. We like geriatric broodmares. Hope you find someone good to give them to. Maybe someone up there has a big pasture where they can be turned out. |

Location: Arizona | Thanks for the good thoughts streakysox, I'm hoping we can find something too. I'm in the same boat myself, have 8 of my own already and really need to downsize by a couple. Otherwise I'd take these 2 girls to my house.
I forgot to include in the OP that the mares are actually located in Queen Creek, AZ. Heck, I'm in AZ now too, need to update my BHW location lol.ย |

Location: Arizona | Well, I have good news! Our BB galla is coming to my area in a couple weeks to pick up another oldie but goodie and is willing to take both mares, or even just the older mare if I find another home for the younger mare in the meantime. Such a blessing, as she's someone I know would give them an awesome home!ย |

Glad that galla will be taking them, but if someone comes along befor galla gets there just be carefull who takes them, I knew a lady that gave a couple of sweet horses to someone saying what a good home she would give them and that someone took them straight to the sale barn so they could make some fast money, so please be picky on who you give them too, I hope that galla gets them both

That older mare just won the lottery!
How I wish that younger mare was closer to the border. I really like the looks of her and so happen to be looking for a new broodie. |

| Oh my would love to have the younger mare! Took care of Hempen when he was at Larry Blackman's ranch in Sunset, Tx. He was very old then and it hurt my heart to see him try to move around. |

Location: Arizona | Hi guys! My mom has decided to take galla up on her offer to take both mares. I've had 5 other people contact me about the younger mare, so thank you so much to everyone who was willing to welcome her into their herds. The BHW is a generous world indeed!
teed, I thought you might get a kick out this little clip my aunt sent me of Hez Sweet a few years ago, performing his nightly ritual of playing with her dogs before feeding time. He was "only" 32 here, but he doesn't seem to have lost a step 4 years later at 36! He's amazingly sound (granted, I don't think he ran fast enough on the track to ever hurt himself haha). Doesn't get anything besides hay, and a senior mash with oil and MSM added. Such a low maintenance guy, and I hope he's getting around well right til the end.

Sorry for the whispered curses in the vid, my aunt was worried the camera didn't start recording in time to catch him playing, lol.
