I was just talked into throwing my name in to get on the school board. I have never ran for anything that was voted on except for horse club board membership. Any advice?

A couple things:
- parents are experts at everything their child participates in.
- their child is special and should always be treated as such.
- it should be Free, Easy, Given, Passed, or Praised. (no matter what "it" is)
If you can accept the above you shouldn't have any problems from the parents or kids. However, if you are doing what you should be doing at least half of them will really hate you. (and that's a good thing)

ETA: I have no experience with school board.

All I can say is good luck with some of the parents, all I can tell you its not going to be a picnic and you need thick skin, I have never been on a school board but knew a few teachers and some parents on school boards when my kids were still in school and there was no way I was getting on one, crazy parents back then and pretty sure its still the same, lol..

Oh I have thick skin LOL and have never been a "yes man." Which is the problem we have with the county commisioners. They all agree with what the lead fella says and for the love of all things holy, that is a position that has proven to us that needs a term limit.

I am nervous and again looking forward to it. There are 4 spots available and last I knew 9 people running for them. I think my chances are as good as any. I am not a hell raiser and as a part time brand inspector I have gotten to know a lot of people out and about in the county. I don't feel I can totally change everything but I want to be a part of it and try and push things in a better direction.

And on another note, my son has a friend that has started picking on him on the bus. Smacking his hat, poking at him, calling names etc. Colt threatened to smack his hat back and the kid said he'd deck him. Has about 4 other brats joining in. Both my son and the one boy went to country school together. The buddy went into town last year, where this is my son's first year in town. I have a feeling if Colt would just ignore the kid he'd get over it quick...but I know the parents so am not a bit surprised it is happening. I am not sure if I should talk to the mom about it or leave well enough alone. I like her a lot, but the dad will encourage it. The bus driver isn't great to work with. Wants them sitting where they are and that is that.  My dad told me to never start a fight but to sure has heck finish it. I always found a accidental elbow to the mouth stopped the bullying pretty fast. But this isn't the 80's anymore...By the way this school is said to have terrible bullying issues.

I have NO doubt you will handle the bully situation with your son AND the board membership with ease. Bet your advice to your son will put the bully/bullies in their place. Maybe literally

I agree and I actually added my name yesterday and he came home today with the bully issue. We talked about either my husband or I getting  on the board a couple years ago when our oldest started school. So I really don't have any personal vendettas as of now, but as a whole we haven't been completely satisfied with how things have been ran there. So I guess it is time to give it a try. At least I can listen in and offer my advice and opinion. Sounds like there is a lot of researching etc involved.

And we had a good talk with our son and since the issue seems to be just on the bus, mostly the ride home, we told him to just keep his distance and don't give the other kids any thought. He's made some new friends at the school and seems to really like his teacher.

As someone who has been a member of a school administration team for nearly 10 years, I have had the experience of working with several different school boards.
1. Absolutley do not go into this with a personal agenda, the school board is there for the student body, not just one particular student or set of students.
2. Do your part in becoming familiar with the laws, rules, and regulations.  The best of intentions often cause rifts and issues because someone thinks they have a wonderful idea, but take it personally when it cannot be carried out because one of the many rules, laws, education code, policies that govern schools and districts.
3. Become familiar not only with the parents, but the students, the administration, the teaching staff. All of them have a different prospective of what problems the district has, it is beneficial to be aware of the different sides and be able to form your own opinion using the information.
4.  If you have a student that attends the district, be prepared to be called out on favoritism etc.
5. Be aware that school districts/boards are much more than test scores and bullying issues.  Besides instruction, there is hiring/firing, unions, transporation, funding, food services, safety, facilities, utilities, community relations, the list goes on and on, you will be making decisions on all of these things.
6.  Above all, have thick skin and be ready to stand up and support your district, you are there to be a part of the team, not a dictator.

#2 x 1000 My mother works for the Broward County School Board (yes the one in Parkland) and one of the biggest problems is that people do not understand the laws, ethics, standards, student rights, etc. that prevents certain things from being passed. Good Luck!

It’s a meaningless position in Louisiana. JBE made sure of that. It does pay a truck note.

So I have heard some school boards pay, but this one does not. I'm sure it is a thankless job, most non paying & voted in positions are.
