My colt has rain rot from all the rain we've had in NE TX in the last 2 weeks. I have been able to treat and get rid of what was on his butt, shoulders, hocks, neck, and pasterns...but I have been treating with MTG and don't wanna put that sulfer oil on his face and ears if I don't have to. Some of the fungus is pretty close to his eyes.

What do y'all reccomend? In all my years of horse ownership I don't know that I've had one with rain rot on his face

How about try essential oils? I am thinking Thieves.  Mix a small amount with a carrier oil and put it on the infected spots.

she could do that, or she could do somehthing that might actually work

Keep it clean, get a good anti fungal. AF on a rag or sponge and wipe it on the spots.

I'm treating rain rot on my geldings pasterns and I've been using Corona Fung-A-Way from Tractor Supply. You could put it on a rag like 1DSoon said, but not too close to his eyes..

I like using Kertaex Mud Shield Powder.  Every time I have tried using MTG or Equiderma on the face it turns into a bad, chemical burn. I have used Banixx, but it is like water.  I prefer the Keratex Mud Shield powder cuz it stays on and it is drying.

I posted a while back for rain rot cures and the Corona Fung-Away was by far the best one somebody suggested. Believe it or not you can order it on line from wal-mart and if you buy other groceries to equal 30 bucks, they ship it for free. Thanks again to the person that recommended it.

Try washing it with some soap and water (or dilute bleach water)and apply antifungal cream a couple times a day.

Of course, if this doesn’t make sense to you, by all means go to the omnipresent β€œessential oils”. It seems to me that essential oils possess mystical curative powers, and I’m sure someone will chime in and tell you they are certain essential oils work. After all, we have all these websites that heap praise on the numerous healing properties of these concentrated smelly compounds, from the immune-boosting potential of oregano to the stress-reducing scent of sweet orange oil. These same websites will often provide you with a convenient way of purchasing these elixirs, of course. Why simply inform when you can sell as well?

Don’t get me wrong. I love pleasant aromas. I love science even more.

I use just enough bleach in water so that you can smell it then use a sponge or rag to wipe over the face.  It has always cleaned mine right up.

At your feed store, they will have a pink fungicide spray that is super cheap.  Apply with a paper towel and circular motion so it doesn't drip in the eye.

Years ago I had a colt that had horrible girth itch.  It would not go away no matter what I used.  Finally I had this old country vet tell me to use the pink spray and it cleared up very quickly.  Prior to that i'd bought every fancy equine product, athlete's foot spray, a bunch of creams.  The cheap pink spray with the yellow label did the trick.

Use an anti-fungal 2x a day on it. Don't wash in between treatments, just slather the cream or spray on the areas of need. Clean all your brushes with a dilute (1% solution) of bleach.

Things that work well: hay wheres the blue stuff, Corona brand anti-fungal spray or cream, rose anti-fungal powder from a garden store.
