I've wanted a hot walker for YEARS. Now that we are closing on our own place, I may have the room (& oppotunity ) to purchase one. What are the pros and cons of the ones with motors vs the "free" moving ones? Where do you all buy from? Has anyone ever been crafty enough to build their own? (I have a crafty dad that needs a project if its even possible to do)
Thanks in advance!

If I was going to get one....I would defiantly go with the free style.......that said YES if you have a crafty person.....they can modify the old style.....just add some extensions to the arms.......etc....I have a friend that did it!

I have a 1 horse motor belt driven 4 speed. It is the old style built out of truck parts. I bought it at a horse sale for $400. My husband did a little work and spent about $100 in a few new parts and that baby has ran everyday for the last 5 years without a problem! It’s great for young horses to keep their feet moving so they don’t get fresh and it’s also a great spot to tie horses. Another plus is they are great for the older horses who don’t need the wear and tear of being rode everyday but yet it keeps them fit. I love mine and couldn’t imagine not having it. Check Craigslist and sales near race tracks. That’s where I found mine.

Free style walkers are extremely expensive but if you can afford it def go for it. Keep in mind sand and ground maintenance are needed. Best thing you can do is buy a used one from a track or training center because they replace them often and you can get a good buy that way. Plus they are very strong and withstand anything your horses can throw at it.
