Subject: Need advice on dealing with a breeder....

Hi all... I need a bit of advice. I know it's early in the game, but I have had my mind set on breeding one of our best mares (Game Patriot x First Down Jewel) to a certain stud in 2019. I know this stud has limited booking, and the stud fee is NOT cheap. I contacted the breeder back in September and asked if and when contracts were available to please send me a breeding contract. They informed me they would be ready by the end of the week. Fast forward 3 weeks and I send another email since I had yet to receive the breeding contract. Keep in mind each time I have emailed breeder I have been kind, letting them know I just wanted to double check on the breeding contract. Once again, I am informed that I will have one by the end of the week. Fast forward 2 weeks and still no contract. I decide to call breeder. The person I spoke to said that the person in charge of sending out contracts was out of town but they would be sent out on Monday (I called on Saturday). We spoke for a minute and I assured her I hated to be a bother but I saw where they had posted on FB a week ago that contracts were available. Another 2 weeks goes by and I send one last email, nicely stating again that I hated to bother them but was really wanting to get my deposit paid and my contract sent in. I get an email back with the contract attached and letting me know that I had not been overlooked.
I mailed my deposit and contract that very day. That was 2 weeks ago. My check still hasn't been cashed and I was supposed to receive the contract back in the mail once the breeder had signed it. Nothing....
I am the type of person that likes to stay on top of things and the breeders I have dealt with in the past have been on top of things. This is the most money I have spent on a stud fee and in my opinion a VERY well-known breeder. I would think this shouldn't be an issue. It has me a little leery to be honest. Do I have a reason to feel this way or is it too early for them to be worried about returning contracts and such???

This does not sound like the type of people I would want to do business with. I would have not kept contacting them for a contract because they do not think you are an important customer.  I would stop payment on the check then contact them and tell them to cancel the contract and tear up the check.

Are they a big operation? Do they collect and ship themselves or have someone else do it? I'd be worried how good they will be to work with when it comes time to get the goods...

All of this has crossed my mind. This is a VERY well known stallion and breeder. I don’t want to name names just because I don’t want to just come right out and bash someone. But, I am glad to hear your opinions. Looks like I may need to re-evaluate my breeding plans for 2019

There are PLENTY of new features stallions out there. Stop payment on the check and choose another horse. I booked three mares to a stallion. When I contacted the owner, he was too busy to talk to me. Should have figured out that the guy was a sleezeball. They kept sending shipments with NOTHING in themβ€”nothing dead, nothing alive. They kept blaming my vet for mishandling the shipment and would not replace them. TWO of the largest breeders in the South told me to cut my losses and move on, so I did. BEST ADVICE is find someone who has the same objective as youβ€”to get your mare bred. I could have bred to Stoli for way less money. Just be careful who you choose to breed to. Just trying to make life easier for you

AGREE WITH ALL THAT HAS BEEN SAID STOP PAYMENT ON CHECK NOW. a bad stallion owner is NOT WORTH IT TRUST ME.

I am jsut like you on top of things contracts in back signed booking down ETC>.
If the stallion owner doesnt value you dont bother! There are WAY to many other stallion owners out there that DO value your business.... dont waste it on people who dont....

I agree with everyone else except the stop payment..........that gets expensive unless you stop the check tell them you did and if they cash it pay their bank fees...............

I would call and talk to the person in charge and tell them that you have decided to look else where for another stallion and ask them to please mail your check back to you since there is no commutation from them and you are just not comfortable with this at all. Or just stop payment on the check and call them and let them know that you stoped payment and tell them your reason for you stopping payment. I have stoped payment on a few checks in my lifetime and there was no problem in doing so, but you need to do this like today dont wait any longer, but you may have waited to long already, so make that call.

Customer service is huge to me no matter what the transaction is.  If it was me I'd choose a different stallion. The only experience I've had breeding a mare was to Frenchmans Fabulous and Kenny Nichols was awesome to work with. That means a lot to me.

did you mail it with a tracking reciept?  if so i would hang out a little while yet.  you can prove you have mailed the contract and payment.  They may just not be ready for 2019 yet.  Kinda like shopping for christmas before halloween.  LOL... come the 1st of dec i would pin them down and if you are still not getting any response, cancel the check then.

ETA.... if i did not have a tracking reciept that would throw a wrench in that plan.
