Hey y'all!

I'm looking into a few OTTB, off the track thoroughbreds, that my friend has been rehabbing and retraining one into my own barrel horse. But I'm looking for insight from you barrel racers out there. It's been years since I have worked and run barrels and I will get a vets opinion on a horse I've singled down to really being interested in. It would be a slow start, mostly ground work and trail rides, not running hard and showing that much for the next year or so for me.

1) Coming 5yo OTTB mare, nice hip, compact, great shoulder, straight legs, BUT has been rehabbing a SHIN fracture...she is HOT and I'm not sure if when she is pasture sound that she will calm down any as she was hot at the track. Any experience with shin fractures and barrel racing careers? Too risky for more problems in the future? She is sound...rears and double barrel kicks from a standstill with ease.

2) Coming 3yo OTTB filly, her front knees are a little underneath her, nice hip, more QH built like, but she is 3 and growing still...the issue with her is that she has some arthritis in her knees, I was told she may grow out of that, or I can have her injected?? She's not on any supplements etc. now and just been chilling in a stall. Again she is growing still...Whats the likelihood if I need injections she will be ok to compete on in the future? Has anyone had their horse's knees injected? What are other ways for handling arthritis?

3) Big 8yo OTTB mare from Brazil, high big hip, nice shoulder, mostly straight legs, short back long underneath, think shes 16.2hh...old set bowed tendon and is sound! I have heard of people racing horses with bowed tendons before..is this true? Any side issues from a set bow?

Opinions, thoughts? I'm more just cautious on getting something and causing issues later on which I would feel bad about. But I want to know other stories/experience if anyone has any with a horse with a bow, knee arthritis, or shin fracture..AGAIN I will have a VET come out and have their opinion as well!

TIA!

I wouldn't worry at all about the shin, time off will heal that and as a barrel horse, you will never have an issue with it again.  OTT horses change a lot when you take them off the hot feed and start turning them out, she could just be hot because they are feeding her up and not training her.  I would try to find out how she trains. I have some very laid back guys that train like beasts and get tough and are hard to gallop, and I have some very hot horses that are super sensitive and respond to every move a rider makes, really try to please kind of horses.

The arthritic knees would bother me, especially if he is a little back in the knee. That may come back to haunt you as a barrel horse.

The bow just depends on how bad and if he came back and ran with it. I train QH so I'm not super familiar with bowed tendons, we just don't see those very often.
