| Saddle recommendations that have wider bars for stocky horses that cost less than $2,000? |

| Last summer/fall I went through $32,000 worth of saddles trying to find something for my stout, big shouldered mare. I tried on every saddle my friends had, bought and sold a million different brands/trees, had a saddle fitter come out (I told him my journey thus far) and he didn't have anything that fit her. I tried a Vernon Purdy and it's the best fitting saddle I've had on her in close to 3 years. I've only ridden in it 4 times but I swear she's striding out better. My friend has problems fitting her thick gelding and found an affordable VP saddle online. Bought it and says it fits her gelding better than her previous saddle. I have no affiliation with these saddles, just a frustrated shopper and I think I found one that finally works.

Sounds like what I went thru - I rode several saddles that I really liked, but my mare would outgrow them. I ran across an used Purdy & it fit her like a dream. It's not easy to find a used one, but they pop up occasionally. |

I have a Robbie Phillips wide with 40 degree bars but it didn't work for my mare. Really like the saddle. |

| I purchased my charmayne James cactus for 1800 and it’s great for a wide horse! |

Location: Oklahoma | My Robbie is a XW w 40’. Yea it is rather draft size. I only use a 3/4 Impact gel pad. Other horse is very wide but high withered , I go to 1” pad . It is more than gullet width and degree ( 45, 42, 40’) It is bar rock, spread and length too you need checked . I have only had it on 2 horses but they sure love it. He is 17 h and 1400-1450? It was made for my horse from scratch , it not Robbie’s regular 7 wide tree premade. Big Ace is big all the way thru his back. Most wide trees made are just wide , flared at front , even if 40’ and do not have enough spread in middle and rear for very stout horses. My hubs Trent Ward strip down fits good tho the Robbie has more bar spread . . One thing I go up and down very steep hills on 4/5 hr rides w a loose cinch on a mutton horse. Cool huh? It is nice and light that is a big deal for a mid 50s gal w a17 h horse. Otherwise I really like CJ Recordbreakers w the leather lining. In case you are not aware, he makes ALL the trees as well as for many other custom saddle makers . So get a fitting he carries 25 or so trees w him to shows . |
