I was out with my horse in his pen yesterday. We were standing by a wooden post and he reached over and cribbed on it. He has never done this before. I could tell he must of just started it because the post didn't have marks on it showing he had been doing this for some time.  (checked other post in his pen, no sign of cribbing or chewing). This colt has a history of ulcers.. last year he was acting colicy and I treated him for ulcers and it went away.  I know he has been stressed because our cattle are turned out next to his pen and I hauled him for the first time away from home this past weekend to some races. I feel like this triggered it. Does it sound like ulcers? I plan on treating him to rule it out. Can I get this stopped before it becomes a bad habit or is it too late? I noticed after painting his post with crib stop he has not touched it.

Definitely sounds like ulcers! If you treat him for it and get it cured, he should stop cribbing pretty quick. Especially if he just started. But, sometimes they will continue rto crib just out of habit, even if they no longer have ulcers. Kind of varies horse to horse...best of luck! Hopefully you get him all figured out  =]

I think it's ulcers too...  we turned our cows out in the pasture next to him and he is very worried about them. Plus I took him with me this weekend so I am sure that stressed him out. I really think he started this yesterday. His pen has hot wire and metal post and only a couple wood post. only the 1 post has a few marks on it.... like he just started it. I checked the post his morning after painting it last night and he hadn't touched it. I'm getting ulcer meds today from the vet. I really hope I can get this handled.
