We have a LQ currently, it’s a 3 horse 17ft shortwall. I also have a bp little 2 horse trailer. I have driving anxiety anyway but hauling my babies even more so, especially after being in a head on collision at hwy speeds hauling a trailer (thankfully I was not driving and we were hauling a toy hauler not live animals but still terrifying!) I just started hauling about a year ago with the two horse and feel pretty comfortable and can get it around our tight horse shoe driveway off a narrow one lane road  The LQ no way no how do I ever feel that I would be comfortable driving it and no way I could get in or out of our driveway with it. My husband used to always come with me so no big deal. He also picked the trailer which was a whole lot bigger than I wanted but planned to use for quad trips and camping stuff as well, anyway he pretty much never comes with me anymore and the quad trips and camping are not happening either so we have a $500+ payment on a trailer I essentially can’t use.

Thinking of selling it but I do want to have a place to warm up/cool off, have a fridge and microwave and a place to sleep a bathroom or st least tolite and sink is ideal. But it needs to be something I can feel comfortable hauling and get in and out or driveway myself. I was thinking maybe a camper  on the truck and keep my 2 horse since its paid off. We do have 2 horses and a mini though and I would like to be able to haul them all in the rare event all three need to go. I have zero experience with a camper though. I would need to be able to get it on and off myself . I have heard it can be scary driving with them and they are a pain to get on and off. Hubby also plans to flatbed the truck so I am not sure that’s an option? Otherwise a smaller LQ might be an option if I sell both trailers but I have never driven a gooseneck and am afraid it will e super hard to find something small enough I feel comfortable hauling. Though people tell me gooseneck is way easier. I have seen some brand new 2-3 horse ones with like 6ft living quarters but they are dang near the same price we paid for the 17ft LQ and I am trying to reduce debts. Ideas or suggestions?

Sell the big trailer and get a smaller LQ. I have a 3H with an 8 ft LQ. For me its the perfect size. It has everything you need but small enough to run locally with.

How much equity do you have in the big one?

I would sell the big one and look for a 3 horse with a 6-9ft shortwall.  9’ will give you a full bathroom with a separate toilet and shower.  6’ you may have to deal with the toilet being in the shower - not a big deal depending on how much you camp, but my in laws do have a 7’ shortwall with a separate shower/toilet, so they are out there.

3 horse because you can use the front stall for storage and haul all 3 when you have to.

I would not buy new.  I would look used for a higher end brand like an Elite, Platinum, 4-Star, C&C (will be older) etc.

What are you using to haul it with?

I can’t help with the hauling anxiety and totally understand why you have it.  I can say I recommend looking at the higher end brands because they are more heavily built and in my experience, haul better.  My in-laws Elite is about the same size our old Lakota was - the Elite hauls SO much better.  Impacted by the wind less, smooth on the truck, etc. We have a 4h 13’ shortwall Platinum now and the same thing, despite being bigger/longer it’s effortless to haul.  The Lakota felt like it was all over the road and I really feel it was because of the lighter construction.  I also feel my horses are safer.

If you are looking at new, they now have bumper pulls with little LQ in them. May be worth looking into.

I am hauling with a 2014 dodge dually 3500. I am totally fine with used it’s just that I have not seen anything used that’s the size I am thinking other than new. I do haul locally 2-4 times a week to ride, rarely camp but do go to large races where we may be there 12-14 hours and want to have some comforts. We camp maybe 2-5 times a year overnight.

I personally think Goosenecks are easier to pull than bumper pulls. Growing up all we ever had were bumper pulls, my dad came to help me move and pull mine and my hubbies big LQ for us.  He said he didn't know why we never had one before because it was so easy to pull.

I would go with a small weekender/LQ.  Don't go the camper route, they tend to move a lot in the wind and are a pain to get on and off a truck

That was my fear! I think we have at least 13k in equity in the LQ and the BP is a 2018 I see selling for around 7k new so if I could find something close to that range for what we can get in cash with selling both, with no payments or even just significantly smaller that would be great. Any one know of brands that typically make 2 plus one or 3 horse small living quarters? The only ones I found were exiss, Lakota or trails west but those were new. I see a lot of higher end ones for sale used but usually 12-15 ft LQ. Maybe it will just take some deep looking. I thought maybe that wasn’t too common of a thing people want or maybe they just hold onto them.

Get a smaller gooseneck LQ and I think you will be surprised how quickly you will adapt to it. I have a 3 horse with a small LQ and it is perfect. I can get in and out of pretty much anywhere without a worry. It is mostly just practice, take it without horses a few times so you don't need to worry about them and you can get comfortable with how it feels and practice. Even better if you can practice backing in to weird spots with no one waiting on you and all the time in the world to do it. I don't think anyone is 100% comfortable with bigger trailers right off the bat but adapt with time and practice.

Oh and I will add, they have awesome backup cameras you can get now to mount on your trailer too! Really helps the backup anxiety.

That is great! I have one on the truck but didn’t know they had them for the trailer too!

I found a couple that seem perfect for what I want 4-7ft LQ in 2 or 3 horse, less than 20 feet long, but I am only finding new within like 2000 miles of me! And the new ones while they do have exactly what I am looking for, size and price is within doable they are Exiss or Lakotas., one trails west. I have no personal experience with either but know people do not seem to tend to think much of at least Exiss. Trailer dealers here seem to sell Exiss, Trailswest, Bison, Lakota and whatever they get on trade. I know people say get a little bit older 4 star, elite, platinum etc but I am not seeing those brands coming up around here much and certainly not the size I want (usually much larger) and usually much much older like 1990s. I am not too picky but if we carry I loan they won’t do it past like 10 years I think it is and I want my ponies to be safe. They new ones do come with a warranty which is nice unless your constantly having to fix stuff.

Does anyone know of a good trailer store in the NW?

I'd say the quality on the newer Exsis and Lakotas are much improved. Most of my friends that have gone to new trailers have one of those two brands, they are considerably more economical and are great for those of us that aren't chasing rodeos nonstop year round.
