Hey all, 

So my mare has had a runny nose since she arrived in Idaho(about 2 months ago). It is clear and at times she does sound a bit congested. She HAS been looked at by 2 different vets for different reasons, but I had them take a look at her as well for this. Both have concluded that her lungs sound good, she is overall healthy, but they suspect it is just allergies. They did tell me to give her some zyrtec but zyrtec can get expensive very quickly when you're giving so many pills a day for a 1000+ lb horse. My vet did suggest Silver lining herbs, but I contacted SLH and they suggested three different items to try all together which would be well over $200 and being that summer is almost over I just can't justify spending that much money on a possibility. She also is very sensitive to flies.

 She does current get 2 lbs a day of Prime Glo, 4 OZ of Formula 1 Noni and 1 cup of Aloe vera juice a day, and she is also on a bermuda grass pasture 24/7 with an alfalfa/grass hay(10 lbs) mix 2x's a day to supplement as the pasture is not that thick.She is UTD on everthing. Was wondering if anyone here deals with equine allergies and has anything that works, and is cost-effective on your pocketbook.

I had good luck with Smartpak's breathe and Tri-hist from my vet. With Tri-hist you just have to watch for Anihydrosis in some horses. It can dry them out enough to make them stop sweating. And if you show, it does test. If I plan on doing heavy work, I give my horse Airpower prior to showing/riding.

I like silver lining. I think they have good products and I use them on my horses and dogs. If it’s a problem that I don’t know what to do for I use a equine natural care rep and they work with me on a case by case basis. I am feeding my fly/bug sensitive horses omega horseshine(ground flax), smart bug off ultra or buggzo and animed msm. If I sense something more going on I like the SLH immune for 30-60 days. We’ve had major bug issues this year! ?? I’ve spent hundreds dealing with it

My good horse develops a minor cough in the summer due to allergies.  It’s worst when it’s terrible hot and humid.  When it’s not bad he might cough once or twice warming up.  When it’s bad it might be a half dozen coughs.

“Cough Free” has cleared it up.  It’s affordable and for him, gets the job done.  It handles allergies so even if she’s not coughing you might try it - I believe his to be linked to allergies.

My gelding is in the same boat in Northern Utah.

I have tried so many allergy supplements (I can't tell you the $100's of dollars I have spent)... honestly the best thing that worked is Zyrtec.  I go to Costco and by their generic brand (Aller-Tec).  I want to say its around $15 for 365 pills.  I started at 10 pills a day (1 pill per 100 lbs) and backed off until I saw the minimum amount that worked.  My gelding is a solid 1,000lb cowhorse but he is maintained on 6-7 pills a day.  I split them up half in the morning and half at night.  He has not had any breathing issues or hives since then.  

Thanks guys, I actually found a product that I am going to give a try, it had pretty good reviews and I was able to buy a 30 day supply to give it a try. If that doesn't work I will look into zyrtec. Thanks!!

Hydroxyzine but you'll need to get that from a vet.
