Who does everyone use? How do you decide your horses worth if it's a home grown not purchased? How do you decide to do major medical or not?

I have a 5 year old I want to get some insurance on. I raised him, the breed fee wasn't expensive, but I have a bunch of training on him and couldn't afford to replace him if something happened. I would like to get 8-10K of insurance on him, is that unreasonable? He's not been ran yet, I'm slow, but he's a jam up ranch horse.

There are tons of threads on this topic. I would do a google search for " Equine insurance barrel horse world" and you can likely spend most of your day reading about all the suggestions. LOL As for value, my insurance company has a Value justification form. You fill it out with training, if they have won anything, etc.  I personally do not go with major medical.

My 6yo has been insured since the day I bought him. He is insured for what I paid for him. I do have major medical, as I want colic to be covered.

I have it on all of mine and it's more for the major medical than anything. In my mind, what are the actual chances of them dying or being stolen that you get with basic theft and mortality? Pretty low.... Whereas I've used my major medical for some high cost diagnostics more than once.

As far as value on a horse you raised, some companies will take the stud fee plus any training fees you've got on the horse.

And some companies won't require you to prove value up front. They'll ask you to prove value on the backside if you end up filing a claim (even if you've been paying on whatever value you deemed up front). Others, such as Great American, require you to prove value up front. But then they don't question value on the backside.

Rosie Bradley got my fut mare insured for me. My trainer was the one who suggested what to insure her for & I agreed with him on that price. She is a daughter of Firewater Ta Fame. The company Rosie got me in had no problem insuring her for what both my trainer & I wanted to insure her for. I bred & raised her. I have her insured for $25,000 & major medical, collic, etc. Rosie was great to work with. I highly recommend her.

I've recommeded this agency several times.  I have one of mine insured for $5K mortality, $5K major medical, for $361.00 a year.  They have a lot of companies and products to choose from.
