Should have asked this before I bought the truck... I just sold my 2012 Dodge 3500 and bought a new 2019 Dodge 3500. I've never dealt with the def system... any issues with that? Everyone like their newer trucks?

I bought a 2013 that had the DEF system and it was nothing but problems so I had it deleted. As long as your under warranty, dont do it but as soon as your trucks warranty expires... Do yourself and your truck a favor and delete that crap. Your truck will thank you. I went from getting 19 mpg to 24 mpg highway. I think I get 18mpg pulling the trailers. My truck just runs better.

But on the flip side...
My husband has a 2015 F350 that has 220k miles on it that he hasnt deleted. Doubt he will. But has had zero problems. He puts DEF in it when the tank gets to half. Other than that, nothing is different. I would have deleted it a long time ago, but not my truck. lol

Well said!! This goes for all newer diesel vehicles. Thank goodness diesels in PA are exempt from emissions testing.

I know someone else with a 2013 that had trouble with trucks as well... that was the first year they had the def. Hopefully they got the kinks out?? I'll keep that in mind about deleting it in the future!

Just don't use cheap DEF or it will screw up the system.

And I have heard about these 18 to 24 MPG claims on the Dodge diesels all the time and when you ride with them on a trip they never can get that.

All diesel trucks only get about 10 mpg pulling a trailer point blank.

Due to EPA all of the companies that sold " delete kits" are no more. There might be some underground programmers out there but feds really cracked down. Also, deleting a diesel is against FEDERAL law. Doesn't matter if your state or county tests. If you have your commercial DL like many of us do ........ and you get pulled over In a deleted truck ...... by by. Most of the newer trucks have worked out the kinks. I would suggest getting the extended warranty

I had a 2013 3/4 ton and never had any problems.  We have 2015 and  2017 ton trucks and we've not had any problems with the DEF.  Love the power we have with these Ram trucks.  When hauling fat cattle we usually get anywhere from 8-12 MPG.   Mileage depends on how many hills and if there's a stiff wind that day and how heavy your foot is.  Just driving without pulling we get 14-18 MPG again depends on how hard you push it.

Luckily they arent strict where I'm at in Texas. I would venture to guess that most trucks running around here that are older, have been deleted. Just better for the truck. Period. I had someone else do it. No programmer on my truck. They deleted something in the computer. So if you pop my hood, everything is still stock on it. just bypassed. The only clue is they took the cats off and I have a straight pipe on it. I had HELL with the exhaust system on that truck. And wasnt dealing with it anymore. BYE BYE DEF and hello a happier truck.

Had a brand new 2018 dodge 5500 and a new 2017 dodge 5500 and they both had horrible issues with the DEF system. Will never buy dodge again.

I bought a 2018 Ram 2500 Cummins brand new and have had zero problems with it and I've put 75K miles on it so far.  I haul with it regulary and still have no problems.  I am getting 18MPG on the highway and 15MPG hauling.  A lot of your fuel mileage comes from your driving style.  If you drive it like you stole it, you won't get more than 10 MPG hauling.

That's why you don't have problems , you drive it like a truck!!! The worst thing you can do with a modern diesel is put around in it. It needs to work to keep the emissions clean and working.

I have a 2017 Ram 2500. I bought it brand new in 2017 and currently have 55,000 miles on it. So far (knock on wood) so good, with no issues with the DEF system, or anything else on the truck.

When I purchased the truck the dealer told me to never carry DEF in the truck and to only buy at reputable stores/truck stops where it is stored in a regulated place. He said to basically buy it and put it in and if there is any left over, toss it. Do not keep the rest for later and do not carry a full one for emergencys, it will only go bad.

I'm kind of ashamed to say I've never researched this further, but just followed those instructions, so I'm not sure why but it seems to work, so thats my only advice.

This is true. DEF has a shelf life and has to be in temperature-controlled areas. Get it at places that are more likely to sell quite a bit, so you have a better chance of getting fresher DEF. I work at a Dodge dealership, and mechanics say to avoid getting it at the pump because water can get in there. Also, do not run out and DO NOT put it in your diesel (this is roughly a $10,000 oopsy). These systems have been out long enough now they have most of the kinks worked out.
