Hello,, I have in all my life, never had a horse with Bone spurs at all, now I have a horse with bone spurs in the hocks, both of them. He is on two months of pasture rest then he can go back to light riding for 30 days and then go back for a re check. He was put on Pentosan, once a week for 5 weeks and they want to do that every 4 months. I took him off the pentosan after the second injection because he had a terrible reaction to it. So hes been on Cetyl M and glucosamine. He shows no lameness.  Just wondering, for those of you that have experience with this, if youd like to share with me, what was your experience was? The outcome? Was this career ending for the horse? Etc? Thank you!

Let the horse tell you.  Horses have different pain tolerance and I have seen there is no way they can run barrels and they smoke them! I have seen 4-5 huge knots on a front ankle and not have any problems.  I have also seen knees with huge knots run no problem and I have seen that barely anything show on xray and be 3 legged.

Have you talked to vet to see if surgery an option?

We  have not talked about surgery at all,, maybe that will happen at the recheck?  He never mentioned career ending or anything and me not knowing enough about it I didnt even know what to ask til I got home and started researching.

It's very common for a barrel horse to get arthritic in his hocks. Yes, especially in early stages , they're not lame, they're sore and their performance goes down.
Some of the prognosis depends on how much Arthritis is in his hocks. Nothing but a joint injection in the middle and lower joint with good HA and cortisone is going to slow down the progression. it won't reverse what's there but it will quiet down the inflammation.
Sometimes, after time, the lower and middle joint will fuse, which will eliminate the need for injections. Some horses never fuse.
With hock arthritis, usually time off will make it worse, not better.

What prompted you to take the horse to the vet in the first place? What was he doing?

Is it bone spurs as part of hock fusion, or bone spurs where they shouldn't be?

Realistically, if it's part of normal fusion, inject him and keep on riding. Some argue that continuing to use them will help the bones to fuse. Hypothetically, once fused, the pain is gone.

In my experience, fusion doesn't cause any "lamesness" when the horse rides, but I'll see it when I make a run and I watch what their back end is doing around the turn. If they aren't using themselves properly, then something is bothering them and needs to be addressed.

My mare had tiny bone spurs when I purchased her a little over a year ago in May 2019. I legged her up really good and started to run her in September,  noticed she wS off after running so based on the Xrays I took on the PPE we injected her in October. We ran all winter and she did great,  in January I noticed her back was getting sore. I had originally had her in a treeless but the dang thing rolled on my 3 xs when we were running,  so I put her back in a tree'd saddle. I thought maybe she needed injected again but I took her to the vet, she passed a lameness check with flying colors, had a chiro come out, PEMF, Magnawave,  Massage therapy,  acupuncture etc. So then I was convinced her back was a saddle fit issue. Took my saddle to a saddle fitter.. it fit her great. Chiro came back out, she pointed me back to her hocks. So i decided to Run her and have her see the vet the next morning.. Bam, we had clinical lameness. Got Xrays.. she had been fusing! Her left one was almost done and the right was just starting.

I still ride her and run her.  We injected what we could but I'm probably going to give her the winter off to finish fusing, I honestly think me running and riding her helped with the fusion process.

For supplements I do give her F1 noni blue label. The way my vet explained it is bone spurs are the beginning of the fusion process and the process requires inflammation for it to happen. When you inject it makes them more comfortable but delays the fusion process. One they are done fusing, they is no more discomfort or pain.
