PLEASE Don't flame me.  I raised this mare she's 10 yrs old and so going to waste.  She's a daughter of blazing jetolena she's got more talent than two of my good horses put together.  Her confirmation is perfect except for the dsld in both hind legs.  I raised two foals out of her dam and both of them are fine.  Don't know why this one got it. She's 100% quarter horse.

my question is, have you ever bred a dsld mare and how was your resulting foal?  I've read the don't do it, why take the risk, and I've totally believed that myself all these years.  I've  just been watching her in the pasture, ripping around, rolling back like a working cow horse, and I know I can't ride her, but what if I could breed her to a foundation type stud?

I understand it's a gamble, but hoping someone had done it with good results.  Thanks in advance :)

It's irresponsible.  It's like breeding two overos when you know you could get a lethal white or breeding a hypp H/H (positive) horse or... Breeding a pssm positive horse.... I could go on...

I had a little mare with so much grit and fire and so consistent in her pattern. I loved her. She had a great personality too. BUT her front legs were horrible. She stayed sound into her mid teens and I could have run her for several years more but I would have had to inject multiple joints in 3 legs. I just turned her out and i, too, watchedher rip and roar for years. I would have LOVED to get a colt out of her but with those front legs, I just didn't think it was a good idea. She has been gone now for several years and I still feel like I made the right decision.

The fact that your first sentence was, "Please don't flame me", tells me that in your heart you already know the answer. If she was a gelding, we wouldn't be having this conversation. Same thing if he were a stud, he'd probably be gelding. You really should hold a mare to that same standard.

No. Please be a responsible breeder, whatever you decide to breed should be out of and by (mom AND dad matter) the best of the best stock to ensure the highest quality genetics continue to benefit the future of the breed.

I appreciate all the input, yes I know the right answer.  I was just hoping 4 or 5 people would say they'd done it and had a perfect foal.  Looks like everybody else decided against doing it as well.  Thank you all I appreciate it.
