If you were starting from scratch and building a new fence, what would it be?  Not huge so expense isn't an issue, just a couple acres, will have wood 4 x 4 posts.  May have foals eventually.  And how high would you make it?  Thanks!

I think if I were to build a fence, it would be 6' no climb, or high tensile wire. My fence is smooth wire, but I have 2 rows of electric fence also, and the babies stay away from it.

No climb.  Everything we have is field fencing which works well also but they do manage to get their feet in it.  One pen is no climb and it's feels and looks the safest.

I raise a few babies each year and I always thot panels would be best - but I have since decided whatever you choose, electric fence will keep horses & colts from getting into trouble or ruining the fencing - i prefer a top rail and non-climb over field fencing but to me, hot fencing is safest (and yes there is always someone to tell a story about a horse getting hurt in electric fence ... but thats the exception & not the rule).

A fencing thats high visibility for the young ones, I have a few that get to running and playing paying no attention to their surroundings and run into a fence, I like the no climb fencing with a top rail thats painted to see better.

Question for you:  Do you know what I can use?  I have 2 3/4" pipe that we want to use instead of t-post or wood post for every so many feet.  What can we use to put on the pipe for electric fence?  We have looked around and not sure what to use.  Also we are doing 2-3 strands of electric.  for sure 2.  thanks!

or if anyone else knows! lol

thank you!

another question  I seen that the insulators for wood is alot cheaper.  Can you use the ones for wood post and drill a hole in the pipe and use the ones for the wood posts?

I have found that electric can be very dangerous with babies. If they get into it and panic when they start getting zapped they can cut themselves up pretty good trying to get loose. I've also had them charge right through electric rope and tear down hundreds of feet of posts and tape/rope in one fell panic. I have also had many incidents with panels both with legs getting hurt and also with the whole foal getting caught under them. Don't ask me why they have to lay down so close to them!

I chose white vinyl for my place. No nails, no painting, if they hit it and it breaks it takes off hair only so no vet bills. I had one run through like it wasn't there and couldn't even find any hair displaced.

Horses will find a way to hurt themselves in a bubble wrapped stall. Babies can be much worse! I chose the fencing I felt would cause the least damage to a horse if they got in a tangle with it or hit it hard.

I didnt mean to steal thread!  I have no babies.  I have 2 older horses thats been there and done that!  Which I know anything can happen at any age.  I have heard horror stories from every kind of fence!  I have even asked the vet whats the best fence...He said depends on what day! lol

Thank you for this.  My vet said he has seen people get the bright orange mesh construction site fencing and put it up for a bit while the babies are little so they can really see it.  We are going with wood fence and may put hotwire on the top to keep the adults off it, but we won't put it low for babies.
