My horse was trimmed two weeks ago tomorrow. Apparently he was trimmed too short because he went from a little ouchy on his front to completely head bobbing lame when I backed him off the trailer for rodeo slack that weekend. I turned out, and had a farrier on site pull the shoe on the front left that seemed to bother him the most, thinking it may have been a hot nail. He has not improved at all. Do I just leave him alone and let him grow back out or is there something I can do to help him in the mean time?

I just had my vet out this afternoon for the same issue. Horse needs pads and about 7-10 days to stop being sore. We did X-rays (and had last year's xrays for comparison).

When using soft rides, are they ok to leave on for extended periods of time? Also, would I need to put on both fronts so that he is level?

I prefer the easyboot cloud boots over soft rides. When my daugters horse became laminitic we used both and he seemed a lot more comfortable in the clouds, they didn't have the frog mold in them.. if it's not lined up exactly perfect I can see how that might be uncomfortable for the horse. They are on the expense side but then again.. what isn't when it comes to horses anyway!

Location: South Georgia | Cloud boots if you have access to them. If not, you could pack the shoe with Magic Cushion and set the hoof down in sand or dirt or sawdust and the magic cushion will stick in there for just about a day. It'll help draw heat/pain out. If the shoe wasn't reapplied, you can still do magic cushion, but it won't stick as well, so I'd wrap the hoof in some vet wrap to hold it in.

Also, would I need to put on both fronts so that he is level? When my IR gelding developed Laminitis his Vet recommeded the Soft Rides for him to help get him up off the ground, and wow the first time he worn them it was a awesome feeling to see that he was comfortable and not in pain. The lady that help me at the company was so great and patience I ordered the wrong size the first time and no problem I sent them back and got the right size. Just make sure you go by the directions on how to measure. And they can wear them all day and night, 24/7 if you need it. I used them also for stalling when hauling to over night races, I like them since they have different inserts for different problems. I bought the Cavallo's to have a second pair and sense they were cheaper I thought what the heck and they have served their purpose too, no complaints from me. The other boots I think the ( Clouds) I have never used so cant comment on them. Soft Rides and the Cavallo I think are great, for short and long term use.

***UPDATE*** An abcess has presented itself at the coronary band. I am not sure that it has ruptured yet, as I did not see signs of any leakage/bursting. Horse is still quite lame. Going to go home and soak that foot and wrap it up.

I agree with Magic Cushion. I usually put an old sock on the hoof and it will stick in there better.
