So we are on a well in SW Florida and are water does come through a softener system into the house.

I currently use gain liquid detergent and about a half cup of vinegar in each load of wash.

Has anyone use the magnets in the wash in place of detergent?  Does it work and remove smells and grime?

Both of us work outside so our work clothes get pretty dirty. 

We've had well water most of my life and never had any laundry problems. Never heard of using magnets instead of soap... I add vinegar sometimes, but we have a lot of hot, sunny days in Texas so most of my laundry dries on the clothesline. Towels and gym clothes don't sour and last forever, jeans don't shrink.

We currently have a HE washer and it's not as effective for really dirty clothes as the old washer that agitated.

We have well water too. It's definitely "hard" I use the original Tide powder and downy softner. I have a maytag HE but I always use the power wash mode and I run a clean washer cycle about 1x a month with the lysol washing machine cleaner to remove hard scale lime etc etc... 

Allergic to Tide anything....we had the frontload water efficient model too...didn't like it.  As soon as the door hinge broke and we couldn't get a replacement for it we went back to top load with agitator.

Just looking for input if anyone had tried the magnets.

If it's an HE, throw it out and buy a washer with an agitator.

Not to brag or anything but my washer has an agitator and it's a HE  lol! Sorry never even heard of a magnet in a washing machine. 

Mine is HE on normal. I don't use that setting. Around here we need lots of water on our clothes.

Agreed...whomever designed the HE model obviously never worked in the Ag industry of ANY kind.

We did go back to the top load with an agitator style.  Wish I hadn't been desperate at the time to get one or would have saved my pennies for a speed queen.

I just thought of something else. I also use lysol laundry sanitizer liquid and on extremely dirty clothes, like when the boys go hunting or fishing and cut up deer or clean fish I use the sanitize option on the washer. It does a great job. 

Laundry detergent is a base. Vinegar is an acid. They neutralize each other. There is no way that a detergent can do what it is supposed to do if it is neutralized. If you have hard water used some type of water softener to "boost" the efficiency of the detergent. I use Oxyclean in almost every load and it helps a lot but I just like the stuff. Never heard of using magnets in the wash, but I think if you quit using vinegar you will see better results. 

I don't know the science behind it but vinegar is the only thing that removes the smell of urine. Don't ever put a splash of vinegar in your mop water thinking your floors will be shiny. (I have a dramatic story)
