How many farriers do you know rasp the outer wall of a horse's hoof dwn to the laminae???? I'm tired of my horses being victims. I normally have shoes on them but here's what these c so called farrier say ""OH I MIGHT GET HURT) MYhorses have had shoes on so many times but since I've been in this area no shoes.. I have 2 really good horses a mare granddaughter Special Effort out ofa mare that won 18 races by son of Raise A Native. Barred Boy. and a Corona Cartel..geldingi'm so tired of all this I can't go through so call farriers that don't know say they are certified and mess your horses up... I've never had a problem befor... I've never in my life seen such a mess. I don't want to fo this anymore.
It's pretty common when you want the toe backed up. There are only to ways to increase palmar angle without adding a wedge or wedge pad : 1. Rasp wall off 2. Remove sole. If you have a flat footed horse and no sole depth, the toe is what you've got to work with.
My husband is a farrier. He works along with a vet and on his own. He's definitly one of the few good ones around these parts and will travel to other states for big barns. He stays booked up weeks out. People may try to go the cheap route but then they regret it. The good ones are hard to find.

Even the lazy ones or the ones without much training are expensive.
I feel your pain and the main reason I have gone all barefoot. Even the guy I have trim on occasion wants to get aggressive and take the heel so he doesn't come back until I get growth back on the heels cause I won't call him unless I have to.. rest of the time I just trim myself.
If you manage to find a good one... pay them EXTRA! . There is a huge shortage of good ones anymore. I just started using a new trimmer who happens to be a woman and she's great. I definitely feel I've lucked out finding her. I've been thru some doozies
