If a horse had strangles a month ago, but has tested negative for it twice, and going to get a 3rd test.  Would that bother you? 

I haven't thought about strangles in forever. but a friend asked. 

In my opinion, a month isn't long enough to have gotten over it, i.e., not carrying it and not being contagious to other horses.  Been through that a few years ago and it is a horrible disease that took a few months to be totally over and not contagious, but like I said, that's my opinion.

Years ago, my mare got it bad.  It easily took 5-6 months to get back to running good and acting like her old self.  It really knocked her down and she was about 11yo at the time.  

It's recommended that the horse be quarantined for at least one month post symptoms. If the horse has had Clean test (especially if he's had two clean tests) I wouldn't have a problem with it. 
There are horses that are silent shedders (no outward symptoms ) but they would not test clean.

Its been probably 25 plus years since I had a horse with it. 

and I don't remember that we handled it correctly, but she ended up fine.  BUT Its one of those things you don't want invite over... Thanks for the input!

She said they are testing a 3rd time before she can pick him up.  (I believe these tests have been weekly, so this is week 3) But it sounds like he should be clear on that too... I just wondered if you get that horse home and turn them out is there a chance that pasture could spread it?  I know it's contagious... but with the 3 negative tests, can they still spread it?

No, they do not flush every horse that has it.  I also had a horse come up with it after 42 days after the first case.  There are chronic horses who can show no symptoms and carry it.  

We did isolate from our property as soon as it was discovered.  And, to make myself feel better we did spray with Synbot(sp) ag spray every where.  

The guy that owns the stallions that I breed to is like 85. He told me that a man was interested in buying a mare he had. The guy had the mare vet checked and in the process he requested that the vet check to see if the horse was a carried if strangles. The vet scoped the horse's nose and there were some little pods in there that makes the horse a carrier. The pods were removed. Supposedly that fixed it. 

I had 6 horses all running together. 

One came down with strangles. Vet said to isolate. I had no place to. They all ran together. Non of the other ones ever had any signs of it.

Its crazy how one can get it and the rest be good...Last strangles I delt with was 30 years ago, and we had the same thing, no place to isolate... no one else got it, but the  one and hers was bad, when it drained, it was gross but man she felt a ton better... 

I had a gelding get it 3 years ago and it took him around 5 months to recover and he was isolated the entire time. For me, I wanted to fully make sure that he was cleared before reintroducing him to any other horses. It went like wildfire through the facility that I had been boarding him at and there was approx. 3 weeks between the first case and him catching it. 

It completely up to you but I would be especially careful with young horses that haven't been exposed to much yet and old horses that might not have a strong immune system.
