Reaching out to see if anyone with some experience in the nurse mare/introducing foal process has an advice.

Nurse mare is a first time momma and lost her foal Saturday evening. Vet said she was an amazing momma with super good demeanor. My foal lost his momma Sunday afternoon. I introduced mare to foal Sunday late evening. She acted super interested in the foal but unsure once she smelled him. I sedated her and baby went straight to her and nursed easily. Since then she has allowed him to nurse without any type of sedation but always while I am holding her and there to watch. She doesn't really seem interested in the foal very much but absolutely tolerates him nursing 4 times a day. I have tried rubbing her milk on him, and I have tried the Vicks on her nose and baby. She will turn and pin her ears and bite at him or lift a leg once in awhile but she isn't aggressive about it just irritable.

So I guess I am wondering if there is anything else I can try or if more time is needed (starting day 3 today) or if it is probably not going to work. They currently live next to each other in stalls.

Back in the old days we used to rub the mares urine on them or the sleeve used for palpation.  Good luck
