I weaned a foal at 5 months old. I hauled the mare a few miles down the road to a different pasture, so it was an abrupt weaning for the foal. This was done two weeks ago. I placed the foal with a gelding who he would attempt to nurse, but this gelding would gently kick at him and did not allow the foal to "nurse" him. Then I purchased a 2 yr old gelding a few days ago and added him to the pasture. The foal has been "nursing the gelding" and the gelding just stands there. The foal is sucking on the edge of the sheath. I dont want this behavior to continue. I cannot find anything online about how to address this issue, so I am looking for advice. Maybe this is an issue I shouldnt be concerned with. I have not raised a foal in serveral years, but I have never had this issue in the past. Any advice is greatly appreciated!
Could you put the new gelding with the mare, whererever you took her, for a couple weeks?
