| I have a mare that has all the cow and rate and turn in the world. Beyond push style... you have to beg this mare to get past a barrel. I am looking to breed her this spring. Who are some crazy fast studs to look into? Trying to stay around $1500 including chute fee and shipping. Not opposed to junior stallions or lesser known names. Just looking to add some Forrest Gump level RUN to this baby. Thanks! |

Location: Oklahoma | There are a lot of really nice stallions at the VGBRA stallion auction and Cowboy State Stallion auction you could bid on. You might get a really nice breeding at a very reduced price. |

I have to colts by Bogart by Corona Cartel. His fee was$1000. Half of him sold for $600,000 and I think his stud fee has gone up. I have a breeding to Four Six Jess this year. He is by Mr Jess Perry, has two half brothers that have won the All American Futurity. Half brother to Apolitical Jess big racing producer. I think his stud fee is $1500 or less. What you want is a stallion that us putting winners on the track. I know very fast stallions who have never produced much that could run. Secretariat comes to mind there. |

I'll include this thought too. Sometimes attempting to throw something different into your horses mix to make the foal faster, isn't necessarily what happens in the end. A friend told me once, breed like to like. So if your horse is cow bred, find the best dang cow bred barrel turner that you can to breed to. I think there's some truth to that. There are certainly plenty of top barrel horse pedigrees to prove it. Look at the pedigrees of the NFR riders from the beginning until now.

I really think that breeding cow horses to running horses is often going to give you characteristics that really are not what you want. For instance horses that run down hill, horses out of proportion. The way I look at it, is that barrel racing is a RACE. Fastest horse wins. My mares are race bred. I bred the two of them to a big winning son of Corona Cartel which is also putting winners on the track. If you spend the time getting a good foundation on them so that they know how to use themselves in a turn, you are going to have a good barrel horse. If you don't do that you will end up with a hot mess. |
