We have a 27 year old mare, still has all of her teeth (floated regularly). It seems like she has lost some weight, and has diarrhea. I plan on treating her with ulcerguard, any suggestions on maybe some supplement to help harden her stools. I feel so bad for her, her hind legs are caked in diarrhea.

I've used Diagel many times for very loose stools, especially foals, when nothing was 'wrong' and some slower gut was needed. Probiotic of your choice will help a whole lot long term.

Our 23 yr old was going through this. Took her to the vet and she has fecal water syndrome. We also found out she can't eat alfalfa anymore. We feed bermuda hay but her grain had alfalfa in it. We put her on omolene 200 as it is the only feed that doesn't have alfalfa in it. Also have her on Gut X. Now her stools are normal.

Free Fecal Water Syndrome in Horses

Free Fecal Water syndrome is a condition in which horses produce normal manure, but before, during, or after defecation watery feces runs from the anus.

Although often concerning for horse owners, it is not associated with infectious causes of diarrhea. However, the watery feces can run down the hind legs and cause skin irritation. Smearing the inside of the legs with petroleum jelly or zinc oxide cream can protect the skin.

There are anecdotal reports that suggest the cause may be due to a range of problems such as poor dentition, stressful situations, parasites, or inflammatory bowel disease.

Some horses respond to dietary management with free-choice hay, and others respond to diets consisting of chaff or chopped hay or hay pellets. Some horses improve with the addition of psyllium husk or table salt (0.5 to 2 tablespoons per day).

My vet recommended Imodium or Kaeopectate for my old mare. I don't remember which one but it was the only thing that helped. Hers got so bad that I couldn't keep her clean and she was losing hair down her legs. It didn't matter what I fed her. Vet said old horses tend to have diarrhea.

Is this a fairly new problem? Are there any grain based feeds in addition to the roughage that you have stated. Is the pasture growing strongly now? A probiotic may help, or if the pasture is growing fast right now that can upset the hind gut and she may become accustomed to that. If that is the issue the problem  may resolve itself.

It's been an intermittent issue with her, but noticed the last few weeks they have been pretty runny. We mainly just feed alfalfa pellets since we have so many horses to feed, we buy in bulk each month. We haven't had much rain so the pasture isn't growing as well as last year. I'm going to start feeding her a senior feed.

Biosponge. But if it continues to happen you will need to determine to root cause. This happened over the winter to my old gelding (32). He can no longer tolerate the soaked alfalfa cubes I normally feed in the winter. The biosponge cleard him up and once the cubes stopped he was fine.

Soaked TC senior and free choice hay. I was only feeding soaked cubes for extra calories and hydration.

I had a couple horses have soft manure on and off this spring and tried ulcer treatment etc. I thought my worming protocol was UTD and everyone had been done as usual but once I gave them all a good shot of dewormer they have been perfect ever since. All that to say after I did more research I am big proponent of not under-dosing when it comes to worming anymore.
