So how do u deal with making tough decisions and reducing your herd. I have raised foals for years. Sale most of them, but I have some awesome colts that have so much sense. It is hard to accept the fact that you are getting older and can't take care of all of them. It is like your life long dreams are gone. Please tell me what makes this easier!!
Nothing seems to make it easier.
All i know is i used to have 9
3 we were currently running
3 in training
3 weanlings/yearlings
We now have 2.
I seem to be penny pinching to keep 2 up to standard. For what i was easily affording 9 not less then 15 years ago.
We are in our mid 50 & 60's so we too are getting older.
So, i don't know the right answer- But YOU ARE NOT ALONE.

Boy, NO kidding! at one time, I had 6, now I have ONE and just ONE is expensive (but he is spoiled rotten)!
We feel your pain. This year was our 24th foal crop and it seems like once you finally get a program up where you want it our boys have grown up and are off to college and help seems impossible to find. We are trying to thin down the herd but it is TOUGH. Edited to add, we have 30 plus horses.
Hugs to you for sure!!! I've had to give up my barrel racing passion and while different, still similar. I catch myself "shopping" your site still LOL! I had to sell most of mine and am down to 2. I have actually found it liberating having less. I can devote more quality time to them and I get a different enjoyment out of that. Less numbers isnt always worse its just the getting to less numbers that hurts.
